Academic Degree Programs and Certificates, Online Initiative (fall 2018)

Winter 2018/19

A request for proposals was made by Provost David Blackwell's office, specifically soliciting ideas for academic degree programs and certificates that can be delivered 100% via distance learning (DL). From the University Senate’s standpoint, the proposals being submitted will likely fall into five general categories. Below please find: 1) a description of the types of proposals; 2) the approval process for each type of proposal; 3) a general description of what Senate requires the proposal(s) to include; and 4) the relevant deadlines for Senate review if seeking a fall 2019 effective date.

Proposers are responsible for ensuring that proposals are submitted in a timely manner. These deadlines have been established to ensure reasonable time for review, not to guarantee an effective date. Incomplete proposals, those with unresponsive contact persons, etc. may move through the process more slowly and may not be approved in time for a fall 2019 effective date.

Please contact Sheila Brothers in the Senate Council (SC) office with anyquestions regarding the Senate’s review and approval process and/or the Senate’s forms (sbrothers@uky.edu/859-257-5872).

  1. New 100% DL academic degree program proposal with associated course proposals
    • Review/approval path for new degree programs: department, college, academic council, SC office, Senate's Academic Programs Committee (SAPC), SC, Senate, Board of Trustees and CPE Board.
    • Proposals include a “new degree program” Senate form and will likely include individual course proposals submitted in Curriculog.
    • Deadlines: The SC office must receive the academic council-approved program proposal by February 11, 2019, if seeking a fall 2019 effective date for type #1. All associated proposals for new courses and changes to courses must also be received by this date.
  2. New 100% DL academic certificate proposal with associated course proposals
    • Review/approval path for certificates: department, college, academic council, SC office, Senate's Academic Programs Committee (SAPC), SC, Senate.
    • Proposals include a “new certificate” Senate form and will likely include individual course proposals submitted in Curriculog.

  3. Conversion of existing face-to-face (F2F) degree program to 100% DL delivery, ONLY modifying delivery mode of EXISTING courses already part of the degree program, but NO changes to any course requirements (other than adding DL delivery to existing individual courses) AND NO proposed changes to admissions requirements, progression requirements, and/or graduation requirements
    • Review/approval path: department, college, academic council, SC office, and Senate web transmittal.
    • Proposals include individual course change proposals submitted in Curriculog; NO PROGRAM CHANGE FORM is required. (Delivery mode conversion is a function of the individual courses – to “convert” an existing degree program to a 100% DL offering, the unit must create course proposals in Curriculog to add DL delivery.) Each DL-related course proposal may also be required to include a four-year plan for all the courses in the DL program.
    • Deadlines: The SC office must receive all academic council-approved course proposals by April 15, 2019, if seeking a fall 2019 effective date for type #3.
  4. Conversion of existing face-to-face (F2F) degree program to 100% DL delivery, INCLUDING modifying delivery mode of EXISTING courses already part of the degree program, AND changes to course requirements (in addition to adding DL delivery to existing individual courses) BUT NO proposed changes to admissions requirements, progression requirements, and/or graduation requirements
