We are the sisters of Phi Sigma Rho!
Phi Sigma Rho is a social sorority for engineers, founded at Purdue University in 1984. (Notice that we aren't a professional fraternity!) Frustrated by the time commitment required to rush traditional sororities, Abby McDonald and Rashmi Khanna set out to form a sorority that would be more sensitive to the demands on an engineer's time. From that humble beginning, Phi Sigma Rho has grown to ELEVEN chapters at Purdue University, The Ohio State University, The University of Dayton, The University of Toledo, The University of Kentucky, The University of Pittsburg, The University of Michigan, The University of Connecticut, Ohio Northern University, The University of Arkansas, and Penn State University, with new colonies at The University of Washington, and just added in June of 2002, UCLA! (Would you like to start a colony at your school? Visit our National Website to find out more!)
We are a diverse group of women who share a common bond in engineering. Our sisters come from a variety of locations including Nigeria, Mexico, Pakistan, Moldova, and India, and they bring their experiences with them. We represent most of the degree programs in the College of Engineering, including electrical engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, agricultural engineering, and computer science. We are also involved with the Lexington Girl Scout troop, Moveable Feast and the local YWCA's Spousal Abuse Center. We also work with SWE and the College of Engineering to benefit UK as well as ourselves. We have camraderie, solidarity, and sisterhood.
