COURSE DESCRIPTION:

 

This course is directed toward achieving an understanding of the interrelationships and complexities of business. The course examines different economic systems and the different forms of business organization, introduces management, marketing, and finance concepts.

 

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

 

1) To introduce students to the general functions of business and the American free-enterprise system.

2) To present to the students the language and terminology of the business world.

3) To prepare students for continuing courses in the business curriculum.

 

 

TEXTBOOK: Business Today, 8th ed., by Rachman, Mescon, Bovee, & Thill, Prentice Hall

Suggested Reading: The Wall Street Journal, Business Week, & Money Magazine

 

 

 

ATTENDANCE:

 

Regular and prompt attendance is required in this class, just as it is in the business community. **Students who are absent will miss class participation, attendance, and assignment points.

 

 

METHODOLOGY:

 

This course will consist of lectures, classroom discussions, and case assignments. Other materials such as videos, outside reading, etc., will also be included in this course. In addition, Corporate Project will supplement the book as a practical "real world" activity.

 

 

MAKE-UP POLICY:

 

There will be no make-ups of any kind. All assignments and exams must be taken at the time and date they are scheduled. Only excused students (excused by the professor) can turn in late assignments. The excuses must be obtained from the professor prior to the assignment due date.

 

 

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY:

 

Any type of academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. If you cheat on an exam or assignment, you will receive an "E" for the course. Plagiarism or suspicion of plagiarism will result in an "E" for the course.

 

 

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

 

Exams - 3 @ 100 300 points 60%

Cases - 3 @ 15 45 9%

Internet Article Summaries 25 5%

Videos, Class Participation & Attendance 30 6%

Corporate /Service Project 100 20%

Total Possible Points 500 100%

 

 

ASSIGNMENTS:

 

All assignments are accepted on the due date only. The assignments must be typed. Late assignments will be penalized two points a day.

 

 

GRADING CRITERIA: 450 - 500 = A = 90-100%

400 - 449 = B = 80- 89%

350 - 399 = C = 70- 79%

300 - 349 = D = 60- 69%

Below 300 = E = Below 60%

 

You are encouraged to discuss your grade standing in this class.

WITHDRAWAL POLICY:

 

Last day to withdraw and receive a grade of "W" is 3/8/99. Students withdrawing after 3/8/99 will risk the chance of receiving an "E" for the course. This instructor has the discretion to grant a grade of "W" or "E" to those withdrawing after the mentioned date.

 

 

CLASS EVALUATION:

 

In order to continuously improve the quality of instruction and to deliver the best service to you, your ideas, suggestions, opinions, and concerns are welcomed at all time. However, you are required to turn in a typed evaluation twice a semester to insure and improve quality. Your comments are due before mid-term and following the third exam. I appreciate your participation in improving the quality of education. It is your choice whether to include your name or not on the evaluations.

 

 

No eating, sleeping, or chewing tobacco is allowed in the classroom. Drinks are allowed but you are responsible for your mess. No beepers or cellular phones to be operated in the classroom.
