COURSE DESCRIPTION:

 

This course introduces the basic concepts of managing financial resources and techniques necessary for financial analysis. The course will emphasize the use of financial ratios to evaluate firms. Computational skills are emphasized.

 

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

 

1) To develop a clear understanding of financial management through a review of accounting principles, financial statements, and finance terminology.

 

2) To cover basic financial concepts and familiarize you with the financial markets.

 

3) To acquaint the student with financial terms used in the business world.

 

 

 

TEXTBOOK:

 

Financial Institutions, Investment, & Management: An Introduction, 6th Ed., by Herbert Mayo.

Suggested Reading: The Wall Street Journal, Business Week, & Money Magazine

 

 

TEACHING STRATEGIES:

 

  1. The basic teaching strategy in this class is lecture and discussion. Students must participate in all class discussions.
  2. Problem solving and theory application.

3) Students are encouraged to read a financial paper or magazine throughout the semester. Students are expected to share news and other financial information with the rest of the class on a regular basis.

 

 

COMPUTER APPLICATIONS:

 

This course will utilize business and word processing software. You are expected to learn to use computers to conduct your project(s). You will need to familiarize yourself with some business software such as Excel for Windows, or Quatro Pro, and Word or Word Perfect for Windows. If you have no experience in computer usage, then you are expected to learn in this course. In today's competitive business and financial environment, it is essential to be familiar and have the knowledge of computers and its various applications to survive. Integration of the Internet and WWW will be emphasized in this course.

 

 

ATTENDANCE:

 

Regular and prompt attendance is required in this class, just as it is in the business community.

** Students who are absent will miss class participation, attendance, and assignment points.

 

 

MAKE-UP POLICY:

 

There will be no make-ups of any kind. All assignments and exams must be taken on the time and date they are scheduled. Only excused students can turn in late assignments. The excuses should be obtained from the instructor prior to the assignment due date.

 

 

ASSIGNMENTS:

 

All assignments are to be turned in on the due date. Proper usage of grammar and spelling is expected in all assignments. Article summaries must be typed. Late assignments will be penalized two points a day.

 

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY:

 

Any type of academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. If you cheat on an exam, assignment, or project, you will receive an "E" for the course. Plagiarism or suspicion of plagiarism will result in an "E" for the assignment.

 

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

 

Exams 200 points 57 %

Homework - 6 @ 10 60 points 17.2 %

Article Summaries - 20

Participation & Attendance - 20 40 points 11.5%

Internet/Investment Project 50 points 14.3%

TOTAL 350 points 100 %

 

OPTIONAL FINAL (100pts): The final exam is optional. It could replace the lowest of the two exam grades. You must take the two scheduled exams before you can qualify for the optional final. The optional final is a comprehensive exam.

 

 

GRADING CRITERIA: 315 - 350 = A = 90-100%

280 - 314 = B = 80- 89%

245 - 279 = C = 70- 79%

210 - 244 = D = 60- 69%

Below 210 = E = Below 60%

 

WITHDRAWAL POLICY:

 

Last day to withdraw from the class and receive a grade of "W" is 3/8/99. Students withdrawing after 3/8/99 will risk the chance of receiving an "E" for the course. This instructor has the discretion to grant a grade of "W" or "E" to those withdrawing after the mentioned date. Students are encouraged to discuss their grade standing any time during the semester.

 

 

CLASS EVALUATION:

 

In order to continuously improve the quality of instruction and to deliver the best service to you, your ideas, suggestions, opinions, and concerns are welcomed at all time. However, you are required to turn in a typed evaluation twice a semester to insure and improve quality. Your comments are due before mid-term and following the second exam. I appreciate your participation in improving the quality of education. It is your choice whether to include your name or not on the evaluations.
