2. Borderlands and Gender

a. There is a wide diversity of work experience in the borderlands
Leslie Salzinger proposes a 3-fold optic for looking at gender relations in Mexican Maquiladoras:

i.             Panoptimex: women work on assembly lines,

Spatial layout: women on line, men on floor and in balcony

'if you got it, flaunt it': women and sexuality in the workplace

Desire, masculinity and the prosthetic relationship: how do male managers get women to work without doing it themselves? Sexuality, flirting, denigration, and frustration: 'they shouldn't wear minis'

Women hires on the line are most important: no men work the line

ii.          Anarchomex: male workspace and male management: contestation and sexuality on the shop floor: Machismo, meek management and distancing
Women and men inhabit different workspaces

iii.       Androgymex: Gender muted: skill matters most as workers are paid on a piecerate basis, and work is skilled.
