Questions for Discussion

  1. What are the functions of the A and B subunits of the A-B toxins? Which subunit is responsible for host cell specificity? Which is responsible for the toxin's effect? What is the most common mechanism of action of these toxins?

  2. Both spore-forming toxins and phospholipases disrupt membranes. How do their modes of action differ? Give examples of each.

  3. How do superantigens (e.g. toxic shock toxin) and endotoxin differ from each other? How are they similar?

  4. Discuss the mechanisms responsible for diarrhea

  5. Discuss similarities and differences in defense mechanisms by a host for infection and intoxication.
