Work-Life

"My Work-Life at UK" - Janice Austin

I am Janice Austin (in photo at left, far right). I have worked in the Elder Care Program at UK for two and a half years.  I have a Master's degree in Social Work and have been working in the aging field for twelve years.  My present job duties include case management, phone or in-person consultation, seminars and workshops and support group facilitation.

In the photo with me are my daughter, Jill (far left) and my grandchildren Kelsey and Nathan. Jill is a Physical Therapist with UK Rehabilitation Services at Kentucky Clinic.   Kelsey is a student at Eastern Kentucky University and Nathan will be entering Woodford County High School as a freshman in the fall.   I also have three sons and three other grandchildren.  My oldest son Brent, is an attorney in Lexington, my twin sons are  Paul, a Pediatric Urologist with

Washington University in St. Louis and  Mark, Director of Distribution for Intermedia Films in Los Angeles.

My interests and hobbies include auctions/antiques, since my daughter and I have a booth at the Versailles Flea Market.  I love to read and have a goal someday to write a novel. I am passionate about social and political issues that effect both young and old and am interested in advocating when change is needed.

Finding myself a displaced homemaker after raising four children, I re-entered college at UK, finishing my bachelor’s degree and getting a master’s degree in social work.  I was a sorority housemother while pursuing my degrees, which was quite a fun and lively experience.  Along with my Elder Care position, I am now adjunct faculty in the  UK College of Social Work, and find I love being back in the classroom.   I feel blessed to be in a profession that allows for rich and meaningful experiences in dealing with elder care issues, while at the same time having the opportunity to teach and mold our next generation of social workers
