What is BeH.I.P.?
The Behavioral Health Improvement Plan (BeH.I.P.) is a phone-based health coaching program that provides you with highly personalized, one-on-one phone coaching over 8-12 months, combined with award-winning health education materials to help guide long-lasting behavior change. BeH.I.P. is FREE for
University of Kentucky employees, retirees, spouses, and sponsored dependents.
BeH.I.P. programs offered are:
- Weight Management
- Nutrition
- Physical Activity
- Stress Management
- Cholesterol Management
- Blood Pressure Management
- Back Care
- Tobacco Cessation
How does it work?
BeH.I.P. is conducted entirely over the telephone. It is a stage-based program that allows you to proceed through each stage at your own pace. BeH.I.P. uses an approach to health improvement that will assist you in achieving long-lasting behavior changes. A Personal Health Coach will work with you over the phone as frequently as once a week or as infrequently as once a month. Your Personal Health Coach will track and measure your progress toward reaching your health goals.
Your appointment will be:
- Delivered to you over the telephone in the privacy of your own home or office.
- Scheduled for a time that is convenient for you.
- Conducted by trained professionals who will help you improve your health with monthly or weekly counseling sessions.

Your Personal Health Coach will help you develop SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Rewarding, Trackable) goals that will put you on the path to healthy, sustainable weight loss. Your Health Coach will address proper nutrition, physical activity, establishing support systems, and identifying current nutrition behaviors to change, such as portion sizes. You may focus on one or more of the action items listed below, but are not limited to these items:
- Identifying and avoiding overeating triggers
- Developing healthier eating habits
- Tracking food intake
- Planning meals ahead
- Keeping an exercise log
- Reading food labels
- Addressing emotional eating and triggers
- Increasing water intake
- Decreasing meal portions
- Eating healthier snacks
Your Personal Health Coach will help you develop SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Rewarding, Trackable) goals that will put you on the path to lifelong healthy nutrition. Your Health Coach will address proper nutrition, establishing support systems, and identifying current nutrition behaviors to change, such as portion sizes. You may focus on one or more of the action items listed below, but are not limited to these items:
- Identifying and avoiding eating triggers
- Recording food intake
- Low-fat versus non-fat foods
- Planning appropriate intake
- Surviving the holiday seasons
- Reading food labels
- Portion control
- Healthy distribution of food
- Choosing beverages (water, soda, coffee, etc)
- Emotional eating
Your Personal Health Coach will help you develop SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Rewarding, Trackable) goals that will put you on the path to a realistic plan for physical activity. Your Health Coach will address establishing a support system for consistent physical activity, multiple options and methods for physical activity appropriate to each individual and identifying areas to change within your current physical activity routine. You may focus on one or more of the action items listed below, but are not limited to these items:
- Preventing boredom/variety of exercise
- Proper food intake for exercise
- Finding time to exercise
- Rewards or incentives
- Exercising with no equipment or gym membership
- Avoiding over-training
- Choosing the best beverages during exercise
- Planning a well-rounded exercise routine
- Making exercise/activity a priority
- Exercise and travel
- Home equipment/gym or fitness center memberships
Your Personal Health Coach will help you develop SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Rewarding, Trackable) goals that will put you on the path to better stress management. Your Health Coach will address understanding stress, benefits of managing stress effectively, recognizing stress triggers, learning coping and relaxation skills, balancing work and life, and seeking support. You may focus on one or more of the action items listed below, but are not limited to these items:
- Developing healthier eating habits
- Improving time management skills
- Prioritizing tasks
- Practicing relaxation techniques daily
- Incorporating physical activity into daily routine
- Improving sleep environment and habits
Your Personal Health Coach will help you develop SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Rewarding, Trackable) goals that will put you on the path to better cholesterol management. Your Health Coach will address compliance with healthy behaviors targeted to help you control your cholesterol. You may focus on one or more of the action items listed below, but are not limited to these items:
- Medication compliance
- Choosing heart healthy foods
- Healthy distribution of food
- Replacing saturated fat with healthier options
- Increasing physical activity
- Achieving healthy weight
- Smoking cessation
- Understanding HDL, LDL and triglycerides
Your Personal Health Coach will help you develop SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Rewarding, Trackable) goals that will put you on the path to better blood pressure management. Your Health Coach will address proper nutrition, physical activity, establishing support systems, and identifying current lifestyle behaviors to change. You may focus on one or more of the action items listed below, but are not limited to these items:
- Medication compliance
- Reducing sodium intake
- Choosing heart healthy foods
- Healthy distribution of food
- Replacing saturated fat with healthier options
- Increasing physical activity
- Achieving healthy weight
- Monitoring blood pressure
- Smoking cessation
Your Personal Health Coach will help you develop SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Rewarding, Trackable) goals that will put you on the path to better back care. Your Health Coach will address proper back care, establishing support systems, and identifying areas to change with current back care behaviors, such as proper lifting techniques. You may focus on one or more of the action items listed below, but are not limited to these items:
- Sore, tight, or weak low back muscles
- Weak abdominal muscles
- Poor posture
- Proper vs. improper lifting techniques
- Effects of being overweight or obese
Your Personal Health Coach will help you develop SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Rewarding, Trackable) goals that will put you on the path to being tobacco-free for life. Your Health Coach will address establishing a support system for tobacco cessation, identifying behaviors that inhibit tobacco cessation, and creating a plan to quit based on the individuals stage of change. You may focus on one or more of the action items listed below, but are not limited to these items:
- Benefits and rewards of quitting
- Handling "Quit Day"
- Staying tobacco-free
- Identifying triggers and coping with triggers
- Withdrawal symptoms
- Specific health benefits over time
- Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) options
- Nicotine-free products
Free Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is available to eligible participants enrolled in this program.
