Join us for the 2012 UK Health & Wellness Conference, Friday, June 1, 2012, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at Embassy Suites, 1801 Newtown Pike. Parking is easy and free. The Wellness Conference is FREE and exclusively for UK employees, retirees, and spouses/sponsored dependents. Attendance at the UK Health & Wellness Conference may be counted as professional development with your supervisor’s approval.

"Sleep: Who Needs It?"

Barbara Phillips, MD, MSPH, FCCP, UK College of Medicine

Join us for a brief, informal overview of the structure and function of sleep and changes over the course of a lifetime. It will include a discussion of two common sleep problems: sleep apnea and insomnia. There will be plenty of time for questions and answers.

Dr. Phillips is currently professor of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Kentucky  College of Medicine. Dr. Phillips is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine and Sleep Medicine. She directs the Sleep Center at the University of Kentucky Good Samaritan Hospital in Lexington.

"Making Healthy Choices for a Lifetime: Let’s Get Fired Up!" session 1 FULL

Dr. Ingrid Adams PhD, RD, LD, UK Department of Nutrition and Food Science

Making healthy lifestyle choices should not be difficult. Learn strategies for success and ways to take control of your healthy lifestyle.


"Respect Works: Healthy Relationships at Home, Work, and Play"

Melanie Matson, MA, UK Violence Intervention and Prevention Center

We have the power to create healthy, respectful relationships within our families, workplaces, and communities. This workshop will include interactive activities, humor, and a discussion of interpersonal communication, workplace policies and practices, and social change. Participants will come away with a greater understanding of interpersonal dynamics, interactive strategies, tips, and fun giveaways! 


"Art Therapy & Personal Wellness"

Tony Grace, MA, LPCA, UK College of Nursing

Engaging in the creative process can be therapeutic for the mind, body, and soul. Participants will have an opportunity to engage in a guided-art process that can provide personal insight and awareness.

Lunch - 12:00-1:00 p.m.

Physical Activity Break - 1:15-2:00 p.m.  Zumba or Group Walk


Session 3: 2:10-3 p.m. & Session 4: 3:30-4:20 p.m.

"Biofield Healing"

Gina C. Lowry, PhD, RN, UK College of Nursing

This session will introduce participants to the idea of using energy exchange between persons for improving health and well-being. Dr. Lowry will explain the philosophical basis for energy healing, and help participants recognize the existence of the energy field that surrounds themselves and others. Participants will learn several techniques to help themselves and others.


"Pet Therapy: Good for Others, Good for YOU too!"

Gloria V. Sams, MA, UK Cancer Program

Therapy dogs are beneficial in a variety of community settings including clinical, educational and assisted living. Therapy dogs are known for increasing self-esteem, lifting depression, motivating physical therap, and even lowering blood pressure and increasing pain fighting endorphins. Volunteering as a therapy dog handler can be a life changing experience for the dog owner as well. Learn more about giving, and getting, through pet therapy from a Somerset Love on a Leash therapy team that has served the community for the past nine years.



"Are YOU Ready for a Health Emergency?" FULL
Vicki Sageser, CPR Instructor, UK Department of Kinesiology and Health Promotion

Do you know what to do when a health emergency of any kind presents itself?  How can you be sure that you will know for the future?  This discussion will include some basic First Aid procedures for common health emergencies.  Mrs. Sageser will share her story of saving the life a man who had a heart attack while on vacation in the hotel where she was staying.  Questions will be taken from the audience about any health emergency situations.
