About ResNet
Q: "What is ResNet? / What services does ResNet provide?"
A:ResNet is the residential network service provided by UK Housing in all residence halls and apartments on UK's campus. Through UK ResNet, each room is equipped with a cable television connection as well as network connections for each student. The ResNet Help Desk provides telephone and on-site technical support for the Internet connection in your room or apartment (see the Get Help page for more information). If you need help with other computing questions, such as questions about email accounts, you can call the IT Customer Service Center at (859)218-HELP(4357).
Q:"How much does ResNet cost? / How much does it cost to have a consultant come to my room?"
A:The cost for ResNet is already included in your Housing fee! You also receive free telephone and on-site technical support for the Internet connection in your room or apartment (see the Get Help page for more information).
Q: "Can I connect my game console or other Ethernet-ready device?"
A:Most game consoles and other Ethernet-ready devices (with the exception of personal networking devices such as wireless routers) are allowed on the ResNet network. Like computers, these devices must be registered for the ResNet network. For more information, click here.
Q:"Is wireless Internet access available?"
A: Wireless Internet is available in the residence hall lobbies. Supplemental wireless access is available in the residence hall rooms in all Blanding and Kirwan halls, Donovan, Haggin, Blazer, Holmes, Keeneland and Patterson halls and Wildcat lodge. Wireless Internet is also available other places throughout campus. For more information about other campus wireless location; please visit: http://www.uky.edu/UKIT/faqs/wireless/.
Q:"How do I apply to work at ResNet?"
A:ResNet only hires once a year, during the Fall semester. We begin taking applications in late March or early April and accept them through mid-July. Please see our Employment page for more information.
Q: "Can I get ResNet if I live off campus?"
A:ResNet is only available in residence halls and apartments located on UK's campus. If you live off campus and would like more information about cable television and high-speed Internet service, you can call Insight Communications at (859) 514-1400.
Q: "I live in a Greek house or the German House, can I connect to ResNet?"
A:While most Greek houses are not included in the ResNet service area, residents of the Phi Delta Theta, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Sigma Chi, Alpha Tao Omega, Delta Sigma Phi, or German houses should contact the ResNet office at 323-4948 (press 2) for support. These houses have high-speed Internet access, but are equipped with data ports instead of cable modems in each room.
What You Need
Q:"What do I need in order to connect to ResNet?"
A:While wireless is now available in most residence halls, you will still need a computer with an Ethernet card installed, and a Category 5 (or 6) patch cable in order to connect to ResNet: if you live in SAE, Baldwin, Ingels, Phi Delta Theta, ATO, Delta Sigma Phi, Sigma Chi, German House, Roselle and Smith or if you have problems with your wireless connection for troubleshooting.
Q:"What do I need to watch TV in my room?"
A:Each room has a mini box and a remote control provided by Insight. You will need to bring a cable ready television, a standard television coax cable and two AA batteries for the remote with you to watch television in your residence hall room or apartment.
Q: "What is an Ethernet card? / How do I know if I have one?"
A:Most new computers come with an Ethernet card although some tablets and small laptops are only available with wireless Ethernet cards. If you are unsure about whether or not your computer has a wired Ethernet card, check your Owner's Manual or contact your vendor for clarification. For some machines that do not come with built-in wired Ethernet cards, USB Ethernet cards are available.
Q:"Where can I purchase a USB Ethernet card and Cat 5 cable?"
A:You can find USB Ethernet cards and Cat 5 cables at the UK Bookstore and most local computer stores.
Q: "What kind of computer do I need to connect to ResNet? / Are there any system requirements?"
A:In order to receive support from the ResNet Help Desk, your computer must meet our minimum system requirements (see our Support Policy page for specific requirements). For recommendations when purchasing a new computer, see www.uky.edu/IT/standards.
Q: "What do I do if I'm missing a piece of ResNet equipment?"
A:When you check in to your room or apartment, the first thing you should do is to take an inventory of your room. If you are missing any ResNet equipment, you should notify your Resident Adviser (RA) immediately. You are responsible for your equipment and will be billed for any component missing at check out.
