Subsurface Stratigraphy of the Mississippian in Eastern Kentucky: Data Release

Contact: Dave Harris

Digital data from a regional study of the Mississippian rocks in eastern Kentucky are available in ASCII format on diskette as open–file report OF-97-03, released in May 1997. This data set contains stratigraphic tops for 7,713 wells. Formations included range from the top of the Mississippian (Pennington Formation) to the Devonian Ohio/Chattanooga Shale. Data were collected from wells selected on the basis of data quality, geographic location, and age. Data were derived from both drillers' logs and geophysical logs, and the data source is recorded for each pick. The data is in ASCII format that is suitable for importing into a variety of computer mapping or spreadsheet programs.

These data are available from KGS Publication Sales.

A series of geologic cross sections using digital well log data and this stratigraphic data are available as Series 12, Map and Chart Series 14. This publication is available online in Adobe Acrobat format. It can also be purchased in hard copy format from the KGS Publication Sales Office.
