Average Depth

The rocks underlying every county in Kentucky have been penetrated by wells in search of oil or gas. The average depth of wells drilled during 1997 is 2,287 feet. The overall Statewide average total depth is 1,436 feet (from more than 118,000 wells in the Kentucky Oil and Gas Well Record Data Base). This difference represents a growing trend toward exploration and development of deeper resources than in the past.
