Doug Long, Senior Research Associate, has been working in the College of Health Sciences since 2007. He began his research career at the University of Kentucky by completing his Master’s thesis related to childhood obesity. Throughout his career, Doug has served on multiple projects ranging from student-driven projects and pilot studies to recently completing a large R01 clinical trial. He has been involved in all aspects of research from grant writing, clinical trial startup, database organization and compliance, and has become the go-to person related to IRB regulatory issues. Doug also serves as the college liaison for Oncore clinical trial tracking across campus. This puts him in a unique position to provide his expertise from experience and streamline processes for any type of investigator.

Effort Policies

To ensure Doug is available to work with a variety of CHS investigators, the following policies apply, effective immediately.

Federally Funded Projects

Doug is available to work on federally funded research projects, as appropriate. However, the PI must budget for an appropriate amount of Doug’s effort.

• No one project may fund more than 20% effort.
• Effort allocation decisions are to be made in consultation with Doug and the ADR, prior to grant proposal submission.

Non-Federally Funded Projects

Non-federally funded projects (i.e. foundations) tend to have smaller budgets. However, every effort should be made to include an appropriate amount of Doug’s effort.

• If staff time is an allowable expense, the PI must budget effort for Doug, as appropriate.
• If the sponsor does not allow for staff salary support, pre-approval of Doug’s services must be obtained in writing from the Office of Research and Scholarship prior to grant proposal submission.

CHS faculty may request Doug’s assistance with the following research-related activities:

• Grant or IRB Language
• eIRB submission or issues
• Clinical trial processes
• Data management/setting up a database
• Guidance on documentation, compliance, or regulatory oversight
• Recruitment/Scheduling
• Hands-on data collection

As the research enterprise in the College of Health Sciences continues to grow, Doug may have to prioritize projects. His time priorities will be, in order: 1) Federally funded projects; 2) Foundations\contracts without support, and 3) faculty pilot projects.
