Principal Fibers of the PDL

In this image, A is the cemetum layer of the surface of the root and B are the highly developed principal fiber bundles of the PDL. The ends of these fibers insert into the cementum layer on the root of the tooth. Those portions of the collagen fibers inserted into the cementum give it a striated appearance and are referred to as Sharpey's fibers (C). What is D?
