Leading Producing Zones for Oil and Gas

Oil and gas are produced from more than 1,500 pools in Kentucky from rocks of Cambrian to Pennsylvanian age. Most oil is produced from Mississippian limestones and sandstones in eastern and western Kentucky or from Ordovician limestones and dolomites in south-central Kentucky. Most natural gas is produced from the Devonian black shale of eastern Kentucky. Currently, there is no commercial production from the Jackson Purchase area of extreme western Kentucky.
