Classes & Requirements

What You'll Study

Students majoring in Spanish choose between three tracks of study: Spanish language and linguistics; Spanish literature and culture; and general Spanish. Majors will develop their Spanish language skills; acquire a deep understanding of Spanish-speaking cultures and literatures domestically and abroad; sharpen critical thinking skills; and heighten their awareness of their role as local and global citizens in a pluralistic society.

 

Graduation Requirements

Any student earning a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree must complete a minimum of 39 hours at the 300+ level. These hours are generally completed by the major requirements. However, keep this hour requirement in mind as you choose your course work for the requirements in the major.   • The Nature of Inquiry in the Humanities (3 hours)

  • The nature of Inquiry in the Natural, Physical and Mathematical Sciences (3 hours)
  • Composition and Communication I (3 hours)
  • Composition and Communication II (3 hours)
  • Quantitative Foundations (3 hours)
  • Statistical and Inferential Reasoning (3 hours)
  • Community, Culture and Citizenship in the USA (3 hours)
  • Global Dynamics (3 hours)

Total Credit Hours - 30


Premajor Requirements 

  • SPA 210 - Spanish Grammar and Syntax and SPA 211 - Intermediate Spanish Conversation or SPA 215 - Written Spanish for Bilingual Students

Major Requirements 

Major Core Requirements

  • SPA 310 - Spanish Composition through Textual Analysis [3 hours]

Other Course Work Required for the Major (from the major department)

  • Choose 10 300+ level Spanish courses to include at least 4 courses at the 400+ level from any of the 3 available options. (Spanish Language and Linguistics, Spanish Literature and Culture and General Spanish) [30 hours]

Course Work from Outside the Major Department

Choose 3 approved courses outside Spanish (SPA) that are at the 200+ level. [9 hours]
