More than 750,000 Kentuckians are food insecure. You can help change that. 

The Certificate in Food Systems and Hunger Studies provides students with a cross-disciplinary approach to understanding the impact of food systems on food security, hunger, and the overall health and wellness of a community. The certificate may be earned by undergraduate students in any college at the University of Kentucky. To satisfy the requirements of the certificate, students will complete 12-credit hours of coursework, maintaining a "C" or higher in all required certificate coursework. 

Required Courses

  • SAG 210: Introduction to Sustainable Agriculture and Community Food Systems
    3 hours, generally offered in fall semester

  • DHN 318: Hunger, Food Behavior, and the Environment
    3 hours, offered only in spring semesters, pre-req: DHN 101, DHN 212 or consent of instructor

  • DHN 319: Seminar in Hunger Studies
    1 hour, offered only in spring semesters, pre-req: DHN 318 (can be taken concurrently) or consent of instructor 
  • DHN 320: Experiential Learning in Hunger Studies 
    2 hours, offered all terms, pre-req: DHN 318 (can be taken concurrently) or consent of instructor

Globally, 795 million people do not have enough food to lead a healthy and active life... There is a dire need for those from diverse backgrounds to have the knowledge and experience to address issues related to food insecurity, which includes promoting a sustainable food system.
