Assignments:
1. Self Student and Exams. The text Abramson, J. Making Sense of Data is a self-instruction manual. Each student will want to complete the first five modules of the Text: A-E. At the end of each module the student will want to complete the self-test using open book.
2. Computer Instruction. Within the computer facilities at UK College of Nursing/Health Sciences Learning Center and the Center for Rural Health, a software package is available and is designed to assist the student to reinforce learned conce pts and methods of epidemiology. The student is responsible for completing four (4) computer modules and answering all questions in each module. The students will complete a self-test to indicate their completed work. The student is on his/her honor to do their own work.
3. Paper. The student will write a paper on a specific population based health problem which is of major importance in Kentucky. THE TOPIC IS TO BE APPROVED BY THE INSTRUCTOR. PLEASE SUBMIT TOPIC IN WRITING BY MARCH 12, 1998. The paper will include:
1. A description of the historical evolution of the problem.
2. A discussion of the population at risk including mortality
and morbidity (ex. Incidence and prevalence) of the problem.
3. A description of the risk factors characteristic of the problem:
demographic, biological, social, economic, lifestyle, and genetic.
4. A critical review of at least five (5) current epidemiologic and
health service or clinical studies (preferable intervention studies) related to the problem. In analyzing the studies:
LENGTH OF PAPER: LIMITED TO 15 PAGES. POINTS WILL BE DEDUCTED FOR ANY PAPER OVER 15 PAGES. APA Manual, 4th edition use is required. THE WRITTEN PAPER IS DUE APRIL 16, 1998.
4. Class Presentation. Each student will do a formal presentation to the class based on their written paper. The presentation will be no longer than 30 minutes. POINTS WILL BE TAKEN OFF ANY PRESENTATION OVER 30 MINUTES. Audiovisuals will enhance the presentation.
5. Final Examination. The final examination will consist of an analysis of a case. The case will present a population based health problem for the student to investigate. Through the application of the concepts and methods of epidemiology the student will identify the health problem and draw conclusions about the best approach to resolving the problem.
