Dorsum of the Adult Tongue

This is the tongue of an older individual (early forties). Fungiform papillae become harder to identify as individuals age. Their surface becomes slightly keratinized - blocking the coloration of underlying blood vessels from showing through. This makes their differentiation more difficult.
