Personal Weather is an immersive installation composed of extruded, sewn, three-dimensional paper clouds made from parchment, vellum, and tracing paper, suspended to form a luminous, atmospheric sky that fills the gallery space.
The work was originally conceived for the 48 Hours of Neukoelln Festival in Berlin, whose theme, BOOM, reflected the city's rapid expansion. Inspired by Berlin's skyline of construction cranes and the environmental consequences of urban growth, the installation considers how human activity generates its own microclimates, or what might be called a "person-derived" atmosphere, giving rise to the title Personal Weather.
Although the Berlin exhibition ultimately moved online during the Coronavirus pandemic, the installation continued to evolve in the studio, where its tone gradually shifted from one rooted in isolation and uncertainty to one of playfulness and quiet wonder.
The clouds, which catch and diffuse light, gently rotate and respond to air currents and touch, became meditations on breath, change, and the passage of time.
