CESL

The Center for English as a Second Language (CESL) helps the non-native speakers of English with the English language proficiency. Students who have not satisfied the English proficiency requirement for admission may do so by completion of the University of Kentucky's ESL program.

The Office of International Affairs (OIA) assists international students with information ranging from immigrations to Education Abroad and many others.

The University of Kentucky is proud of its diverse student body. UK's enrolled students represent more than 100 countries around the world. These students enjoy an enormous array of choices with over 200 majors in 11 academic colleges.

International Applicants

The University of Kentucky defines international applicants as those with citizenship other than the United States of America. Permanent Residents of the United States should complete a domestic application and include a photocopy of their Permanent Resident card.

Requirements

  1. International Application for Undergraduate Admission
  2. $60 non-refundable application processing fee.
  3. Transcripts
    All secondary school and college/university level transcripts must be submitted for review. Transcripts must be official and English-translated. College/university transcripts from institutions outside of the United States will be evaluated for transfer credit by our office. To insure that you receive the most transfer credit possible, you may choose to have your transcripts evaluated by a professional credential evaluation agency. The University of Kentucky recommends World Education Services (WES.) Please visit WES website for details and instructions and list the University of Kentucky as the receiving institution.
  4. Course Descriptions
    Applicants are required to provide official, English-translated course descriptions of all college-level courses completed. If admitted, these will assist in awarding credit, academic advising, and registration.
  5. Bank Statement
    Official bank statement is required on bank letterhead. Please show an available balance in U.S. dollars of $28,900 if applying for the Fall 2010 Semester. Fees are subject to change.
  6. Sponsor Guarantee Form (PDF*).
  7. English Proficiency
    The University of Kentucky accepts official TOEFL and IELTS results (school code is 1234.) Students must score at least 527 (paper and pen), 197 (computer based), or 71 (iBT) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language. Students must score at least 6 on IELTS. Students attending a US high school for one academic year or more must provide ACT or SAT results. Applicants who do not meet the English proficiency standards may attend and complete our Center for English as a Second Language program to satisfy this requirement. An additional application to the program is required.
  8. Freshman applicants who wish to be considered for academic scholarships must also provide official ACT or SAT results.
  9. Additional documents may be requested at time of application.

Faxes and photocopies of official documents will not be accepted.

Conditional Acceptance

Students who meet academic admission requirements but who have not yet provided proof of funding will be admitted on a conditional basis. Official acceptance and an I-20 will not be issued until proof of funding is established.

In addition, students who meet academic admission requirements, but who have not satisfied the English proficiency requirement, will be admitted on a conditional basis. The English proficiency requirement may be satisfied by the student supplying official TOEFL results, IELTS results, or by completion of UK's Center for English as a Second Language program.
