New Faculty Teaching Academy

Workshop on student reflectionThe New Faculty Teaching Academy is a series of workshops offered to faculty new to the University of Kentucky to assist them in having a successful start with teaching responsibilities at the University of Kentucky. It is sponsored by the Center for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching (CELT) and is intended to serve as a follow-up to New Faculty Orientation.

The workshops are designed to introduce participants to issues such as course design, effective teaching strategies, the characteristics of UK students, and the academic culture of the campus.

There will be four workshops offered during the Fall 2013 semester detailed below. For information regarding all CELT workshops for the upcoming semester please visit our Events page.

  • How Do I Handle This? Challenging Situations In and Out of the Classroom

Student incivilities in and out of the classroom are uncomfortable situations whether it's texting or talking during class, dominating a discussion, exhibiting prejudicial behavior, or other discourteous and disrespectful behavior. This workshop will focus on what could have been done to prevent or mitigate these incidences and what can be done if the behavior occurs.

Date: Wednesday, September 18 and Thursday, September 19
    Time: 3:30 - 4:30 pm
Location: Niles Gallery, Lucille Little Fine Arts Library
    Presented by: Bill Burke

Assertion Evidence Design: Re-Thinking Presentation Slides

This interactive workshop requires the participants to prepare in advance by viewing a short video. Throughout the session participants will have an opportunity to apply the assertion-evidence structure to one of their own upcoming presentations. Either a laptop or handouts can be used to create the newly structured slides.

Date: Wednesday, October 9 and Thursday, October 10
    Time: 3:30 - 4:30 pm
Location: Niles Gallery, Lucille Little Fine Arts Library
Presented by: Bill Burke and Kathryn Cunningham

Documenting Your Teaching Activities: Assembling a Teaching Portfolio

Putting together a teaching portfolio, to include writing a teaching philosophy statement, is an excellent way of providing evidence of instructional practice so that judgments on teaching performance go beyond simply using student evaluations (which also have their place). It is also an excellent way to engage in reflective practice regarding your teaching. This workshop will cover how to write a teaching philosophy statement and what to include in a portfolio.

Date: Wednesday, October 30 and Thursday, October 31
    Time: 3:30 - 4:30 pm
Location: Niles Gallery, Lucille Little Fine Arts Library
    Presented by: Bill Burke

Large Enrollment Classes: Challenges and Solutions

Teaching a large enrollment class (however you may define that) has many of the same challenges as teaching smaller classes, only magnified. Plus, it presents some unique problems in terms of management and presentation. In this workshop we will look at some of these large class demands and discuss strategies to deal with them.

Date: Wednesday, November 20 and Thursday, November 21
    Time: 3:30 - 4:30 pm
Location: Niles Gallery, Lucille Little Fine Arts Library
    Presented by: Bill Burke
