INTERCULTURAL RESOURCES IN FILM

Available in the Media Library at the Young Library

The Office of International Affairs sometimes uses films to create awareness of potential problems when communicating with persons from other cultures thereby increasing oneĖs ability to avoid such problems. Following is a partial listing.

Cold Water (48 minutes)
This video is about cross-cultural adaptation and culture shock. Twelve Boston University foreign students are interviewed about the experience of living and studying in a new culture. Central to the problems the students encountered are major difficulties in values and behaviors between the foreign students and the Americans they meet. Their views are interspersed with those of an American student and with cross-cultural specialist. It comes with a comprehensive instructional guide making an excellent resources for the American classroom.

A Different Place: The Intercultural Classroom (Par I 21 minutes)
Par I depicts a classroom of international and American students interacting with one another and with their professor. The participants behave according to their cultural assumptions of appropriate classroom behavior, which leads to unresolved conflicts, reinforcement of negative stereotypes, and a lack of positive educational experiences. Accompanying instructional guide.

Bridging the Culture Gap (28 minute)
This is an introduction to the challenges of interacting with people from different cultures. Colorful film from around the world powerfully illustrates fundamentals concepts of culture in theory and practice. Audience will be impressed by the importance of cross-cultural skills and will be shown how to become more effective in foreign situations.

Managing the Overseas Assignments
This film dramatically shows specific problems Americans might have when doing business in such countries as Japan, Saudi Arabia, England, India and Mexico. Cultural taboos and accepted standards of business behavior are explained by foreign nationals of the host countries. Strategies for improving personal performances in foreign business situations are described. One can easily adapt what one learns in this film to situations with foreign students.
