In Memoriam
David Lawrence, BA '35, MA '39, Louisville, died January 10, 2000. Lawrence was the first dean of students at the University of Louisville in 1952. A former UK basketball player under Adolph Rupp, he earned his bachelor's degree in physical education and social science and his master's in educational administration. As track coach for the University of Louisville Cardinals, Lawrence won state championships in 1947 and 1948. He is survived by his wife, the former Doris Shrader; a daughter, Judy Miller; two sons, William and Gary; a sister, Ruby Meeks; brothers Duard and Blaine Lawrence; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Carola Spurr Steffeck, BA '44, Wheat Ridge, Colorado, died December 24, 1999, at the Hospice of St. John. Steffeck was a member of the Foothills Genealogical Society, Mile High China Painters, Foothills Porcelain Artists, and the International Porcelain Artists. She is survived by a son, Richard Bismarck; a daughter, Mary L. Steffeck; a brother, Burgess H. Spurr; and a grandson.
Gilda Stratton Murrell, BA'70, Louisville, died January 12, 2000. She was founder and former owner of Medical Management, Inc.; a former employee of the Kentucky Cabinet for Human Resources; and a member of the University of Kentucky Alumni Association. She is survived by her husband, D. Bryan Murrell; her mother and stepfather, Margie and Don Call; and a stepsister, Jennifer Rutherford.
