FRANK ETTENSOHN - DIRECTOR
Frank Ettensohn grew up in the Cincinnati, Ohio, area, and from a very early age, was collecting fossils and rocks and trying to tell people about them, which is what he still does part of the time as a university professor. Frank received his B.S. and M.S. in Geology from the University of Cincinnati and his Ph.D. in Geology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Frank has been teaching and researching in sedimentary geology and paleontology since arriving at the University of Kentucky; he was chair of the Geology Department for eight years and is currently director of the Honors Program at the University of Kentucky. He has taught in high school, the military, teacher development, and as a visiting professor in the former Soviet Union, China, Ecuador, and Nepal. He has won two Fulbright fellowships, two Levorsen Best Paper Awards (ES-Am. Assoc. Petrol. Geologists), Educator of the Year Award (ES-Am. Assoc. Petrol. Geologists), a Lifetime Achievement Award (Amer. Assoc. of Prof. Geologists, KY Sect.), and most recently, the Superlative Award for a Distinguished University Scientist (Kentucky Academy of Science). He has published more than 160 scientific papers and has advised 42 graduate students to degree completion. He is known internationally for his work on the geology of oil and gas shales.
Since coming to UK, Frank has also been interested in undergraduate education and has participated in several University undergraduate learning experiences, including Mankind's Place in the Universe, the Modern Studies Curriculum, and Freshman Discovery. He joined the Honors Program in 2006 and became Director in 2008.
He is the father of two children, Clare, who holds degrees in theology and spirituality and works in Community Outreach and Service Learning in Seattle, WA, and Marc, a former UK Honors student, who is a fourth-year medical student at the University of Louisville. He especially enjoys working in the field with students, travelling with his family, hiking, camping, playing banjo and working with the Boy Scouts in the Lexington area.
Meg Marquis - Senior Academic Coordinator
Meg serves as the advisor for all Honors students, program coordinator (scheduling classes, organizing events, serving as faculty liaison, running student programs, coordinating admissions processes), LLC partner, and Singletary Scholars program coordinator. She also teaches UK 101 and serves on a wide variety of university committees.
Meg is an UK Honors Program alumnus, having graduated with a BA in English and minors in Business and Classics in 2001 and an MA in English in 2003. Her areas of scholarly interest include 19th and 20th century American literature, gender studies, and corporeality and body studies. She worked previously as the UK English staff advisor and has taught extensively at UK and Transylvania University.
Outside of her many responsibilities in the Honors Program, Meg spends time with her first-grade daughter, reading voraciously, knitting, cooking, and skating with her roller derby team, the Rollergirls Of Central Kentucky (ROCK).
Penny Mazur - Staff Support I
Penny is the jack-of-all-trades in the Honors Office. You will see her as you open the main door and you will hear her when you call the office. Her duties include maintaining the HP database, the HP website, and processing applications and prospective student visits. She helps the Honors Program faculty with their book orders, syllabi, and grades. Penny can also be found un-jamming a copier, reattaching a doorknob, or bringing in cookies for the students.
Penny started working in the Honors Program at the University of Kentucky at the end of September in 2008. Her past work experiences include everything from sending a US Swimming Team to compete in the Pan American Games through “Checkpoint Charlie” in East Berlin - to testing the software that controlled the Space Station toilet prototype. With her work background, Penny has acquired experience in database management, website design, accounting, and non-profit administration.
In over the past 15 years, Penny has volunteered countless hours to organizations such as the Girl Scouts, the Lexington Ballet, and Project Linus.
A mother of three, Penny lives in Lexington with her husband, Paul, four dogs and two cats.
Connie Duncan - Budget Officer
Connie has been with the University Of Kentucky for 29 years spending most of that time working with amazingly talented students. Her primary responsibilities for the Honors Program include budget, scholarships, event planning and fund raising. Her office is typically the first stop for Honors students looking for funds for activities such as studying abroad or attending a conference in the United States. The highlight of her work during 2011 was helping plan and develop the Honors Program 50th Anniversary Celebration; her 23 years of close involvement with the Singletary Scholars and Honors Program students made this committee work especially rewarding. The Celebration was so successful that Honors Program has decided to make it an annual event.
Connie's UK career includes six years with the Office of Sponsored Projects, nine years with the Academic Scholarship Office, and the last 14 years as budget officer for the Honors Program. If you know Connie you know that during basketball season you will always find her dressed in blue and right behind the Eruption Zone cheering on the Wildcats. The rest of her free time is spent playing with her two grandsons or traveling with her husband Mark.
