Ohio County had an estimated population of 21,972 (8,933 households) in 1999, with a projected population of 23,400 (10,200 households) in 2020. Public water is provided to over 7,600 households, or almost 90 percent of the county's residents. In areas not served by public water, about 80 percent of the households use wells and 20 percent use other sources. About 345 customers will be added to public water service through new line extensions from 2000 to 2020. If all proposed water-line extensions are made, about 7 percent of the county will still rely on private water supplies in the year 2020. The Water Resource Development Commission has prepared a report on water-supply infrastructure in Ohio County. It is estimated that there are over 200,000 water wells in Kentucky.
