Wolfe County had an estimated population of 7,503 in 1999 with 33 percent on public water. The estimated 2008 population was 6,979 with 85 percent served by a water utility. In areas of the county not served by public water, about 90 percent of the households rely on private domestic wells and 10 percent rely on other sources.

It is estimated that there are over 200,000 water wells in Kentucky.
