Estill county is located in the eastern knobs and eastern coal field regions of Kentucky. It was formed in 1808 and named for Captain James Estill, an early settler in what is now Madison county. The county seat is Irvine. The population of the county in 1990 was 14,614.

Much of Estill county lies within the Daniel Boone National Forest.
