Graves county was formed in 1824. It is located in the Jackson Purchase region of the state. The elevation in the county ranges from 321 to 580 feet above sea level. In 2010 the county population was 37,121 in a land area of 551.74 square miles, an average of 67.3 people per square mile.

The county seat is Mayfield.
