Nicholasville, the seat of Jessamine county, was named for George Nicholas, one of the authors of Kentucky's first constitution and the state's first attorney general. It is at the junction of US 27 and KY 169 about five miles south of Lexington. The Nicholasville post office opened in 1806 and the town was chartered in 1812. The population in 1990 was 13,603.
