Winchester is the seat of Clark county and is located at the junction of US 60, KY 627, and KY 89. It is also served by I-64 and is at the western end of the Mountain Parkway. It was founded in 1792 with the new county and named for Winchester, Virginia. The population in 1990 was 15,799. The Winchester post office opened in 1803.
