HINDSIGHT and FORESIGHT

Looking back on 2005 and ahead into 2006, we here at Central Kentucky Radio Eye are struck by the generosity and giving spirit of this community.

In August, we installed major broadcasting equipment all because of the kind donations from organizations and hard work by individuals here in Central Kentucky. Engineer Ned Keller from Clear Channel helped with the installation. Carpenter Joe Gierlach built custom tables and cabinets to house all the equipment. Executive director Margaret Chase and volunteer Bob Dickinson worked hard to coordinate the project. Chase said, "This modern equipment will enable us to provide our listeners with a clearer, stronger signal."

Then in the fall, we held our Annual Appeal for donations, and help came from all corners, helping make it one of our best yet. Our Annual Appeal donors are appreciated, and they are listed inside this newsletter.

In the past year, we have continued strengthening our network of friends in this community, and we have forged new relationships and links. This winter, we'll continue a new tradition by participating in a book sale fund-raiser at Barnes & Noble book store. That's what this newsletter is all about: building and growing in the year ahead.

FROM THE CHAIR

In spite of the disasters and tragedies of the past year, CKRE's Annual Appeal was our best yet. And we want to thank those "old" repeat donors who helped us again, and those "new" donors who joined our cause. Thanks to you as well as all those donors who contributed throughout 2005 (listed in previous editions of Radio Eye), CKRE is able to provide a vital service to people unable to read because of vision loss or a physical disability that prevents them from holding or turning a page.

And this might be a good time to remind you that CKRE is an independent organization. Each year we must raise 100% of our operating costs. There is no parent or partner picking up our tab, and we are not a line item in someone else's budget. Depending as we do on the generosity of private individuals, foundations, businesses, service clubs and other groups, our donors play a major role in what we do.

Which brings me to our next fundraising effort. If you enjoy reading and want to help people who can't, then I would like to ask you to BUY A BOOK in support of our 3rd Annual Bookfair at Barnes & Noble on February 24 through 28. Do this and Barnes & Noble will donate a percentage of your purchase to CKRE. The goal is for more than $10,000 worth of books to be purchased during the Bookfair. This will ensure a 25% donation to CKRE. We did it last year, and we can do it again. So please check Page 7 of this newsletter for more details and the required voucher. Help us exceed that $10,000 goal. Many thanks.

Margaret Chase
Chair & Executive Director

OUR VOLUNTEERS & LISTENERS

FIVE QUESTIONS FOR ... Volunteer Diane Curtis:

She is a 53-year-old retired teacher and currently works as an online instructor for Kentucky Virtual High School. Her family includes husband, Marcus Manning, two teenage children, two dogs and two cats. At CKRE, she is host of the And Also... program.
What is your favorite hobby? I love to read because it's an inexpensive vacation! I also spend way too much time playing online word games, such as Word Jong and Word Mojo, just because I love words.
What do you like about living in the Bluegrass? When I was a teenager, I vowed I would leave boring old Kentucky and never look back. As an adult, I've come to love this place, its natural beauty, and residents who are happy to exchange hellos with me (even if they don't know me!).
What would you change about the Bluegrass if you could? I would love to see local developers "develop" an appreciation of our area's intrinsic value.
What is your favorite newspaper or magazine? Real Simple is my current favorite magazine. It is filled with practical advice for everything from getting rid of clutter (a major unfulfilled goal of mine) to finding new uses for old stuff you thought you couldn't use any more.
Why do you volunteer for CKRE? I really enjoy sharing information that might be of help to our listeners. A big bonus is that I get to learn so much while searching for that information.

BOARD MEMBER HONORED
CKRE executive board member Janell Turner, who is also a state Office for the Blind vocational counselor, has been honored with the agency's Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor of the Year award. Turner helped 38 visually impaired people enter or re-enter the work force during the 2004-'05 federal fiscal year - more than any other counselor. Congratulations, Janell.

WITH REGRET

BOOKFAIR FUNDRAISER FOR CKRE

BARNES & NOBLE, FEB. 24-28, 2006

Shop Barnes & Noble at Hamburg Pavilion February 24 through 28, and Barnes & Noble will donate up to 25 percent of your purchase to CKRE.
This is a great way to help CKRE. It's also a great time to stock up on gifts while helping print-impaired Kentuckians stay up to date in our community.
Just select a book (or books, books-on-tape, CDs, etc.), and present a bookfair voucher to the cashier at the time of your purchase. It's that simple.
Why not ask friends and family to join in? Just clip the voucher below or download more at www.uky.edu/Libraries/CKRE/ and then head over to Barnes & Noble on February 24 through 28.
A voucher must be handed in to ensure your purchase is counted toward the Bookfair. Vouchers can be found at Slone's Markets, all Lexington Public Library branches, John's Shoe Stores, Alfalfa Restaurant and PHAT Pie Café. For more information, call CKRE at (859) 257-2702.
Thank you for your help.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

If you are looking for other ways to give, Central Kentucky Radio Eye has a current need for office help.
These volunteers will aid the studio manager with filing, data entry, answering phone calls, etc.
This opportunity will give you a chance to speak with many of our listeners, asking them about their radios and our programming.
You will get to meet other volunteers, observe live readings and have the chance to get a real "behind the scenes" feel for who we are and what we do at CKRE.
These positions would require at least three hours per week, but the days and hours are quite flexible.
Anyone interested in further information should contact us at the studio. The number to call is (859) 257-2702. Please ask for Sarah; she would love to talk to you!
