Onieta Stewart has known loss — in fact, she felt it while she was a student in UK’s Physician Assistant Program.

The 43-year-old non-traditional student was one of many who coped with a changing world during the pandemic. But she felt it harder than most.

On Friday, June 3, the College of Health Sciences celebrated our Physician Assistant Studies Class of 2023 as they participated in their White Coat Ceremony — where students recite their oaths of commitment and receive their white coats, symbolizing the start of their journey to become Physician Assistants.

It was while working as a clinical research associate in the Neurology Department at UK, as well as volunteering in a medical mission in a Syrian refugee camp in Jordan, that PA student Ghadah Karasneh knew she wanted to help people.

“During these experiences, I found a lot of joy in working with patients, and found it very rewarding and satisfying,” she said.

The 2022 CHS Student Awards was a feel-good, end-of-the-year celebration of achievement held in the Worsham Cinema in the Gatton Student Center.

And through that work, she received firsthand experience by providing substance use disorder treatment as a Physician Assistant. This inspired her to apply for a much-needed grant that will help the Commonwealth.
