Undergraduate and Graduate Students Enrolled in Independent Study Credit
All undergraduate and graduate students who are earning academic credit for independent study or research must register through UK Education Abroad. All undergraduate students will be enrolled in EAP 599 for one credit hour at the appropriate residency rate, which will maintain the student’s full-time status at UK. This also allows most tuition/fees for additional hours earned abroad to be waived. Graduate students have the option of opting into EAP 599 for the same benefits, but must notify the UK Education Abroad office in writing that he/she wishes to opt into the course no later than 30 days before the term abroad.
Students who are traveling under UK auspices (e.g., on travel funded or endorsed in any way by the University), but who are not enrolled in credit related to their travel, must register through the Office of International Health, Safety & Security. Please contact Jason Hope, Manager of International Health, Safety and Security.

Graduate Course Enrollment: 767 versus 749
XXX_767 and XXX_749 are both placeholder courses for doctoral students conducting field research. Graduate students enrolled in a 767 credit course associated with independent study or research are considered to be engaging in credit-bearing international travel and must register through UK Education Abroad. Graduate students have the option of opting into EAP 599 at the in-state tuition rate, and must notify the Education Abroad office in writing no later than 30 days before the term abroad if they wish to enroll in EAP 599. Students may not enroll themselves in EAP 599 as UK Education Abroad will do so automatically at request, however they will need to work with their academic department and the Graduate School to be enrolled in XXX_767.
Enrollment in EAP 599 (alongside 767) will maintain the student’s full-time status at UK and allow most tuition/fees for additional hours earned while abroad to be waived. By enrolling in EAP 599 (1 credit), the tuition associated with 767 (2 credits) will not be charged. Students will only be assessed for the 1-credit associated with EAP 599 at the in-state rate of tuition. Graduate students enrolled in a 767 course are highly advised to speak with their academic advisor prior to opting into EAP 599 to ensure proper allocation of any funding.
If a student must travel abroad to conduct field research, but, as a result, would be placed in severe financial difficulties by having to meet the 2 credit hour 767 post-qualifying tuition obligation, the Graduate School is willing to accept petitions for registration in XXX_749 (a zero-credit hour course). Students in this situation should meet first with their DGS to ensure that they have been properly registered. Once a student is registered for XXX_749, they must register their travel through the office of International Health, Safety, and Security. Contact Jason Hope with any questions.

All University of Kentucky students earning academic credit for an independent study and research experience abroad are eligible for the Education Abroad Scholarships. Students enrolled in a 749 course are not eligible for scholarships, as this is not a credit-bearing course.
