Susan Carvalho has served as Associate Provost for International Programs at the University of Kentucky since 2010. She has previously served as Associate Dean in the College of Arts & Sciences, chair of the General Education Reform Steering Committee, interim chair of the Departments of Hispanic Studies and Political Science, and as Director of the Spanish School at Middlebury College. She also spent a year as a Fellow of the American Council on Education, in the offices of the Chancellor and Provost at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Susan was selected as an AIEA Presidential Fellow for 2009-10, and partnered with Michigan State University for consultation in the establishment of UK’s International Advisory Committee. In her role as Associate Provost, she oversees the UK International Center and the implementation of UK’s comprehensive internationalization agenda. Nationally, she serves on the Executive Committee of the Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA), and globally she serves as PI on several international grants and contracts involving the university. Her campus-wide role at Kentucky includes enhancing global research and curriculum initiatives within each of UK’s colleges, advising the university’s senior leadership on international strategy, and chairing the International Advisory Council. Susan earned her Ph.D. in Spanish from the University of Virginia in 1989, and has served on the faculty of the University of Kentucky since that time, continuing to hold a faculty position as Professor of Hispanic Studies.
