Five UK students receive scholarships to study abroad

Five University of Kentucky students have been awarded prestigious scholarships administered by the Institute of International Education to support their study abroad goals.

Four of the students received the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship; a congressionally funded scholarship sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) at the U.S. Department of State and administered by the Institute of International Education.

International Studies Abroad Opens Office on UK’s Campus

Education Abroad (EA) in the University of Kentucky International Center has developed a new strategic partnership with International Studies Abroad (ISA), an international education organization that hosts students from multiple universities. This unique partnership between UK and ISA will be facilitated through an ISA office on UK’s campus.

UK Student Goes Several Extra Miles For Internship

Many UK students consider internship experience to be critical in their preparation for the professional world. A Lexington-based company, Lexmark Inc., consistently facilitates students from various majors into its internship positions. One student, however, took this longstanding relationship with Lexmark one step farther, or approximately 7,400 miles farther, geographically speaking.

UK at the Half' Explores International Education Week

Susan Carvalho, associate provost for international programs at the University of Kentucky, and Ben Stow, international student and member of UK's golf team, were guests on yesterday's "UK at the Half," which aired during the UK vs. Duke game that was broadcast on radio.

"UK at the Half" airs during halftime of each UK football and basketball game broadcast on radio and is hosted by Carl Nathe of UK Public Relations and Marketing.

Education Abroad in the University of Kentucky International Center has developed a new online “toolkit” for faculty members who are interested in embedding international education experiences into their otherwise residential courses:

Education Abroad develops two new grant opportunities

Education Abroad in the University of Kentucky International Center is offering two new grant opportunities for graduate students and faculty members.  

“We are partnering in new and exciting ways with our graduate students for the on-going assessment of student learning abroad,” says Anthony Ogden, director of Education Abroad. “Recent research shows that it is no longer enough just to send students abroad, but we have to intentionally design programs that lead to measurable outcomes.”

'Global Classroom' Increases Student Opportunities for International Experience

Arts and Sciences began using Global Classroom Connections in March to provide cross-cultural experiences and possibly even help develop friendships among students at UK and in other countries. Global Classroom Connections also allows faculty to collaborate with institutions outside of the U.S. through electronic links between courses.

During the spring semester, A&S faculty were asked to propose links between A&S courses and courses at institutions outside the U.S. Five courses were chosen for the first set of Global Classroom Connections courses.

Cao Wei Unites UK and the China University of Mining and Technology

In 2005, the University of Kentucky College of Engineering formed a partnership with China University of Mining and Technology (CUMT). The goal of this cooperation was to offer a program of exchange for students and staff on both sides that would be mutually beneficial. September marks the seventh anniversary of this partnership, which continues to grow and has been home to nearly 30 students studying in the various fields of engineering, as well as Dr. Cao Wei, an associate professor and director of graduate studies at CUMT.

Gatton Opens Doors for International Education

As university graduates face an increasingly global and internationally connected marketplace, the Gatton College of Business and Economics strives to equip students with necessary experiences for success. Brendan O'Farrell, international director in Gatton, is opening doors to make those experiences possible.
