The College of Arts and Sciences produces podcasts that demonstrate work being done by the faculty and students in the college. Each week, UKNow will highlight a podcast. This week focuses on an A&S education abroad course.

 

Education Abroad Prepares Students for International Experiences

Culture shock is the disorientation one feels when immersed in an entirely different cultural setting, such as an education abroad setting. Though it often leads to discomfort, it is actually seen as  a vital component of international experience.

“Culture shock isn’t a bad thing at all,” Anthony Ogden, director of Education Abroad at UK said.

UK Education Abroad Peer Ambassadors Help Students "see blue." Abroad

After returning from an education abroad program, many students want to prolong their international experiences and stay connected to the country they temporarily called home.  Many also want to help their peers attain similar education abroad experiences. UK students are able to do this through the Education Abroad Peer Ambassador (EAPA) Program.

Education Abroad at UK Offers Range of Scholarship Opportunities

UK alumna Lauren Cook did it in Switzerland; UK  junior Hannah Simms did it in China; they studied abroad. Widely seen as a life-changing experience, education abroad has been perceived as one with added financial burden. However, Education Abroad at UK is seeking to dispel the myth that money is necessarily an obstacle; rather, they want students to know money does not have to be a barrier.

More than Just a Second Language - Service Learning

Everyone knows that the sole means to attain profound knowledge of a language is through immersion. Speaking the language with other individuals such as classroom peers and instructors is a wonderful practice.

But is there a way to even improve this experience? Researchers and teachers are currently seeking ways to expand the immersion technique.

Asia Center Scholarship Recipient's Kyrgyzstan Experience

After receiving a scholarship from UKIC’s Asia Center, Holsapple spent the summer of 2011 studying at the London School, a language institute in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan’s capital.  

“Central Asia always stood out to me as an area fascinating in terms of its sundry blend of cultures, languages and spheres of interest.  Without a doubt the most democratic Central Asian state, Kyrgyzstan struck me as the perfect place to study,” she said.  

In Kyrgyzstan, Holsapple lived with a local host family while she studied Russian. 

UK Students Experience the World Without Leaving Campus

Sophomore Joe Papp grew up in Nicholasville ― just down the road from UK's campus.  At first, he thought he needed to look at universities further away from his hometown because he had an itch to travel and discover other cultures. 

Five UK students receive scholarships to study abroad

Five University of Kentucky students have been awarded prestigious scholarships administered by the Institute of International Education to support their study abroad goals.

Four of the students received the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship; a congressionally funded scholarship sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) at the U.S. Department of State and administered by the Institute of International Education.

International Studies Abroad Opens Office on UK’s Campus

Education Abroad (EA) in the University of Kentucky International Center has developed a new strategic partnership with International Studies Abroad (ISA), an international education organization that hosts students from multiple universities. This unique partnership between UK and ISA will be facilitated through an ISA office on UK’s campus.
