University of Kentucky (UK) Institutional Research and Advanced Analytics (IRAA)hosts open lab sessions from 9-11 a.m. on the first and third Friday of each month. Sessions are open to all students, faculty, and staff. The next session will be October 20th, in Room 108 of the Don and Cathy Jacobs Science Building.
In the most recent session, Tableau dashboard tips were shared by guest presenter, Michelle Combs, Senior Scheduler & Data Analyst with the College of Arts & Sciences. Combs has learned to utilize many useful features of Tableau, including customizable buttons to help improve navigation. Combs demonstrated how she simplified complex data charts with Tableau’s dashboard feature, which gives the viewer a more streamlined, interactive Tableau experience.
Combs is a Tableau “Super User” within the College of Arts & Sciences, and works closely with the IRAA team. “Super Users are the experts within our colleges. If faculty members or other members of the college need data, they turn to us. Tableau is an amazing tool for the University and it has helped our College with decision making. Using Tableau, we can make informed decisions based on actual student data to increase student success in our College,” said Combs.
An introductory Tableau training is available at the beginning of each lab for all in attendance. At the end of the first hour, attendees break out into groups and members of the IRAA team answer questions, brainstorm options to initiate new projects, and help solve issues analyzing institutional data.
IRAA is a collaborative effort between the Office of the Provost's Office of Institutional Research and the Office of the EVPFA Information Technology Services’ Advanced Analytics team. Together, these teams support strategic decisions and initiatives at the university.
