MLKC Programming

The essence of the Martin Luther King Center is its annual calendar of high quality cultural/educational programs consisting of lectures, concerts, theatrical and dance performances, film and video screenings as well as exhibits and workshops. Its program history has included campus visits and presentations by scores of artists, speakers, activists and intellectuals the likes of Muhammad Ali, Maya Angelou, Spike Lee, Edward James Olmos, Alex Haley, Ruby Dee, Ron Dellums, the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater, Bishop Desmond Tutu, Randall Robinson, Nikki Giovanni and many, many more. These programs have enriched the university experience for thousands of students, faculty, staff and members of our regional community.

Major Programs
The King Center sponsors major programs, including "The Convo" series, which has hosted notable figures such as Bobby Seale, David Banner, Charlamange Tha God, Fonzworth Bentley, Tatyana Ali, Malik Yoba and Award Winning Record Executive Amir Windom.  Additionally, the Center has brought Dr. Terrell Strayhorn, journalist Shaun King, Dr. Ricky Jones, and other speakers who align with the mission, goals, and core values of the King Center.

The Black & Latino Male Initiative (BLMI)
First Thursdays at 5:30pm in the King Center
BLMI provides an opportunity for Black and Latino male students at the University of Kentucky to connect with other students, faculty and staff. Our goal is to collectively devise strategies for persisting and pursuing excellence at the University of Kentucky and beyond.

Majestic Unity (MU)
Third Mondays at 5:30pm in the King Center
Majestic Unity provides support, encouragement and empowerment to women of color while enhancing leadership skills, social and cultural development throughout their college career. Food Provided

Soup & Substance: Real Talk, Real Issues, and Real People Series
Third Thursdays at 5:30pm (see King Center Staff or semester calendar for location)
Led by our programming interns and in collaboration with Underground Perspective (UGP) this program discusses current topics and creates dialogue sessions that relate to race, gender, class, and a variety of intersectional identities. Food Provided.
