Graduate Certificate

The primary objective of this option is to prepare advanced practice registered nurses for national certification eligibility and licensure in a new or additional specialty area of practice through a formal, organized curriculum that focuses on specialty courses in the student's area of interest. Post-Master of Science in Nursing, Post-Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing and Post-Doctor of Nursing Practice individuals are eligible to apply.

Specialties

Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner

Adult-gerontology acute care nurse practitioners focus on assessment, diagnosis and management of acute health problems. Graduates are prepared to care for acutely and critically ill adults. As members of a multidisciplinary health care team, practitioners work in intensive care, progressive care, other hospital units, specialty clinics and specialty physicians’ offices. Download sample curriculum here (pdf)

Graduates of this specialty will be eligible to sit for the Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner certification exam with the American Nurses Credentialing Center or the Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner exam with the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN).

Adult-Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist

Adult-gerontology clinical nurse specialists provide advanced clinical care along with patient and staff education. They serve as consultants for complex health care problems and design evidence-based interventions. Download sample curriculum here (pdf)

Graduates of this specialty will be eligible to sit for the Adult Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist certification exam with the American Nurses Credentialing Center or the Adult Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist exam with the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN).

Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner

Adult-gerontology nurse practitioner are prepared to assess and manage adult health and common acute and chronic illnesses, emphasizing prevention, wellness, and patient education in all patient interactions. Download sample curriculum here (pdf)

Graduates of the Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner specialty will be eligible to sit for the Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner certification exam with the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) Certification Board.

Family Nurse Practitioner

Family nurse practitioners provide primary care to patients of all ages and will become experts at diagnosing and treating common health problems, promoting wellness and helping patients learn effective self-care. Graduates of the Family Primary Care Nurse Practitioner specialty will be eligible to sit for the Family Primary Care Nurse Practitioner certification exam with the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) Certification Board.

Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner

A pediatric acute care nurse practitioner specializes in the assessment, diagnosis and management of acute health problems for infants, children and adolescents. Graduates are prepared to care for acutely and critically ill children and adolescents. Pediatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner

A primary care pediatric nurse practitioner specializes in health care for infants, children and adolescents. They practice in a range of settings, including children’s hospitals, physicians’ offices, schools and other acute and primary health care settings. Download sample curriculum here (pdf)

Graduates of the Pediatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner specialty will be eligible to sit for the Pediatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner certification exam with the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PNCB).

Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing 

These nurses become experts at caring for clients with mental health needs and psychiatric disorders, which include schizophrenia, anxiety disorders, mood disorders such as bipolar disorder and depression, and substance abuse. They focus on the family across the lifespan, with skills encompassing the full spectrum of psychiatric care, from independent practice to consulting on psychiatric conditions in a variety of health care settings. Download sample curriculum here (pdf)

Graduates of the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner specialty will be eligible to sit for the Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner certification exam with the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

Executive Nursing Leadership

The Executive Nursing Leadership (ENL) option is based on the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) Nurse Executive Competencies, the AONE Population Health Competencies, the American Nursing Credentialing Center Nursing Executive Certification domains of practice, and the Essentials of Doctoral Education for Advanced Nursing Practice. The curriculum emphasizes strategic leadership, organizational/systems practice, evidence-based management, financial, quality/safety, information management expertise and health care policy. Graduates will identify actual and emerging problems, and they will design aggregate-level health interventions. They will work with diverse stakeholders for inter- or intra-organizational achievement of health care organizational related goals.  Download sample curriculum here (pdf)

Graduates of the Executive Nurse Leadership specialty may be eligible to sit for the Nurse Executive - Advanced certification exam with the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the Certified in Executive Nursing Practice exam with the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE).  Eligibility for certification also requires meeting practice requirements for the respective agency.
