Free Bike Class for Students Offered Saturday

The North Lexington YMCA is offering Traffic Skills 101, a bicycle education class, on Saturday, October 19 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. The cost is $20 per person, but the class is free for UK students.

The class includes a classroom element, as well as a ride through neighborhoods and downtown Lexington. Helmets are required. Attendees who do not have helmets may borrow one from the North Lexington YMCA. Participants will need to dress comfortably, yet choose clothes appropriate for the on-bike portions of the class.

Preregistration is required. Interested students can find out more or register by calling the High Street YMCA at (859) 254-9622 and mentioning the Better Biking program.

Bike Lanes Installed on Portion of Red Mile Road

UK and the Lexington Fayette Urban County Government recently partnered to add bike lanes on Red Mile Road from Unity Drive to near the intersection with South Broadway. This addition aids in connecting a corridor of dense student housing to the existing campus bicycle network (PDF).

Portions of this section are buffered bike lanes, the first such facilities in Lexington. A buffered bike lane includes a marked buffer lane, indicated with white chevrons, between the bike lane and adjacent travel lanes; no vehicles are allowed to travel in the buffer lane. This design provides extra room for bicyclists to increase safety.
