Rock Climbing Spring 2018

Offering Dates: February 18; April 7;

Trip Description: A chance to get out of the gym and enjoy a full guided day of rock-climbing in the heart of a world-renown climbing destination.

  • Location: Red River Gorge, KY
  • Cost: $30
  • Registration: NOW – Friday, February 18th OR April 6th at 4pm (Johnson Center main office; Mon-Fri 7AM - 6PM)
  • Cost Includes: group transportation, climbing gear (shoes, harness, rope, belay device, protection)


  • 8:30 am: Meet in the Johnson Center lobby
  • 9:30 am: Arrive in the Red River Gorge
  • 9pm-9:30pm: Arrive in Lexington

Mandatory for all trip participants:

  • At least 2, 1-liter Nalgene-style water bottles
  • Hiking appropriate (close-toed) boots or shoes
  • A headlamp or flashlight with extra batteries
  • Pack and bring a sack lunch or snacks
  • A small backpack for carrying water, food, flashlight, extra layers, climbing gear, and additional items

Recommended for all trip participants:

  • Money for dinner at Miguel’s Pizza
  • Waterproof footwear (Gortex)
  • A headlamp-style flashlight
  • Check the weather prior to trip, and pack accordingly - dress in layers (cotton and denim are not recommended)
  • Rain gear (waterproof jacket, pants, and pack cover) – even if it’s not in the forecast
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, camera

Assessment of Difficulty: This type of activity will require a moderate to advanced level of physical fitness. Hiking may total between 2-3 miles on varying terrain. Climbing routes vary in difficulty (from easy to extremely difficult).

Environmental Hazards: Risks include, but are not limited to: hypothermia, heat-related emergencies, snake or insect bites, soft tissue injuries, dislocated joints, sprains, strains, fractures, concussions, and potentially death. However, proper preparation and adherence to guidelines will minimize many of these risks. The trip will continue through rain or shine. Participants may encounter wet and/or cold conditions.
