It includes:
  1. The acquisition of new knowledge and understanding of living systems through the innovative and substantive application of experimental and analytical techniques based on the engineering sciences.
  2. The development of new devices, algorithms, processes and systems that advance biology and medicine and improve medical practice and health care delivery.
As used by the foundation, the term “biomedical engineering research” is thus defined in a broad sense: It includes not only the relevant applications of engineering to medicine but also to the basic life sciences.
Why Pursue Graduate Studies at UK? Biomedical engineering has existed at the University of Kentucky for almost 60 years. We started offering degrees in Biomedical Engineering nearly 30 years ago. Here is some of the things we offer our Biomedical Engineering graduate students: -The Department of Biomedical Engineering is located within short walking distance of a major academic medical center with all six health sciences colleges and the full spectrum of academic colleges on a single campus. Few engineering schools have access to such colleges all so close by. -Aided by its proximity, faculty within the department routinely collaborate with other departments in the Colleges of Engineering, Medicine, Dentistry, Health Sciences, Arts & Sciences and Pharmacy, as well as units such as the Markey Cancer Center, Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Spectroscopy Center, Saha Cardiovascular Research Center and Institute for Sustainable Manufacturing. -Our alumni are highly respected in their fields, whether in academia, government agencies or industry. -In 2014, the Department of Biomedical Engineering moved into renovated facilities with new labs, personalized study carrels, and access to a lounge reserved for graduate students. -In April 2016, the department received a $7 million gift from Joe and Joani Halcomb to rename the department the F. Joseph Halcomb III, M.D. Department of Biomedical Engineering. The naming gift will add one endowed chair and two endowed faculty fellowships as well as fully-funded graduate fellowships to attract top graduate students and support their research.  https://www.uky.edu/academics/sites/www.uky.edu.academics/files/Dr%20Zhang%20BME.jpg Dr. Guigen Zhang Professor UK has the whole package—Colleges of Engineering, Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Health Sciences, Public Health, Nursing, Design, Fine Arts, Communication, Business, Arts and Sciences, Law, Education, Social Work, Diplomacy and International Commerce and Agriculture on a single campus. As a result, we provide a transdisciplinary environment that is crucial if we are going to advance science and technology and promote economic growth in a timely and socially relevant way. It is a graduate training program that encompasses research in areas of pharmaceutical sciences that range from identifying fundamental mechanisms of human disease, to the design, development, and formulation of new medicines, to understanding the impact of drug policies on health care systems. Within this broad scientific framework, students develop individually tailored programs of study to meet their particular research interests and career objectives. Intense, laboratory-based and data analysis-driven research, using state-of-the-art techniques and instruments, forms the basis of a student’s PhD dissertation. Each student develops the skills and judgment to make a unique, scholarly contribution to our understanding of drugs and how therapies impact human health and disease. Students receive the training that will enable them to become independent scientists who can conduct front-line research in pharmaceutical sciences in industrial, academic or governmental settings.   The overall goal of the graduate program is to provide the graduate student with a comprehensive, structured, yet flexible educational experience comprised of both coursework and independent, highly creative research. This goal is supported by additional components, such as research rotations for first-year students and a program-wide seminar series. The intent is to provide both depth and breadth of expertise in the Pharmaceutical Sciences along with developing the creative and critical approach to research that characterizes a PhD-level scientist. Our faculty have established a set of Guiding Principles that direct the evolution of our program to meet these criteria. These can be found at https://pharmacy.uky.edu/apply/phd-program.

The “scientist practitioner” and “ecological systems”/”whole child” concepts guide the program. These views foster the conception of the school psychologist as broadly capable of conducting research and practicing effectively with clients, in addition to considering the ecological complex in which the child exists.  The School Psychology program offers two degree options: Educational Specialist (EdS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Both programs are approved by through the National Association of School Psychologists and the Doctor of Philosophy program is fully accredited by the American Psychological Association.   A wealth of career opportunities to support children, families, schools, and communities   The school psychology programs offer a breadth of classroom choices and a wealth of field experiences. The combination of these classroom and experiential activities result in graduates who are prepared for many of the professional challenges of a school psychologist. The EdS program is a three year program (2 years of coursework, 1 year of internship) while the PhD program is a 5 year program (4 years of coursework, 1 year of internship).  Graduates of the programs are afforded a wide variety of opportunities. Specialist graduates are typically employed in public school positions, but opportunities also exist in educational cooperatives, specialized school settings, and agencies. Doctoral graduates have similar opportunities and also have opportunities for college and university teaching, research and program evaluation positions, and a broader array of positions in agencies providing mental health, health, and developmental services to children and adolescents. Placement in appropriate professional positions has been close to 100% in recent years. Our alumni work in P-12 schools, universities and agencies across the commonwealth and many of the 50 states.
