Born in Lawton, Oklahoma, and moved to Mt. Sterling, Kentucky at a very young age, DeShay earned a B.S in Psychology with a minor in Child and Family Studies from Eastern Kentucky University. Upon graduating from Eastern Kentucky University, DeShay continued her education there and received an M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. She began her journey in higher education working at Bluegrass Community and Technical College as a Program Facilitator First-Year Coach. After years of being there, she joined the Career Advising Team at the University of Kentucky's Stuckert Career Center.
Prior job that shaped her: DeShay worked at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School as a GEAR UP Career and Readiness Coach. During her time there she was able to work with juniors and seniors to help explore different educational and career pathways post-high school graduation. She was also given the opportunity to work with students who were not academically college-ready to help ensure that they were ready for college upon graduating. It was these experiences at Paul Laurence Dunbar that sparked a flame in DeShay. To provide services to students that aids in ensuring achievement in their higher education goals.
How she would describe herself: Customer-oriented and persistent with a broad mind to be proactive and get things accomplished for the good of her students, colleagues, and the university.
What she enjoys doing outside of work: Spending time with her daughter and son, husband, and dog Obi; attending sporting events (soccer); painting and writing; watching favorite Youtubers; spending time with friends.
A goal in life: Travel the world and see things in person that she grew up as a child looking at in books.
Fun Fact: She is learning how to knit and it has become her new obsession.
