We have a wide range of partner farm offerings for the 2023 CSA season.

Your 2023 partner farms are: Barr Farms, Elmwood Stock Farm, Hickory Grove Farm, Homegrown Direct LLC, Lazy Eight Stock Farm, Old Homeplace Farm, Rolling Fork Organic Farm, Rootbound Farm, Sustainable Harvest Farm, and the UK Organic Farming Unit. If you are an employee or retiree on a UK health insurance plan, you can use your voucher to pair with any of these farms.

What is a CSA?

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is like a subscription to a farm. CSA shareholders purchase a share of a farm’s harvest before the season starts and commit to being a shareholder for the entire designated season. In return, shareholders will receive a weekly box or bag of farm vegetables and sometimes fruit and herbs as well.

The UK HR Health and Wellness CSA Voucher program helps make this choice easier for you! As a participant in this program, employees* and retirees** on a UK health plan receive either $100 or $200 vouchers toward the cost of a CSA share from one of our partner farms. As a participant in the voucher program, you will receive:

After you claim your voucher, you will receive a confirmation email with a code and a link to instructions on how to use your voucher to purchase a share with your chosen farm.

* Please note this is considered taxable income by the Internal Revenue Service and will be included as a fringe benefit for taxation on your UK paycheck.
**Please note this is considered taxable income by the Internal Revenue Service and should be reported accordingly.

Hickory Grove Farm started in 1786 in Pleasureville, KY. Through the centuries the farm has grown just about everything. Their family has always been motivated by a deep connection to the land and desire to raise foods using regenerative and organic practices so they can hand it off to the next generation better than they found it.

The farm is currently run by Ryan Burnette who raises certified organic mixed vegetables and pasture-raised meats and eggs. They offer both meat and produce CSAs to eaters around the bluegrass.

Optional Share Customization, Pausing a Share and CSA Member Benefits
  • At every market we sell our vegetables in containers as units so there is no weighing of products at checkout. (For example, 3 zucchinis would be in a berry basket and that would be one unit.) When you arrive to pick up your CSA you will be told how many units you get that week and if there are any restrictions. Early in the season when production is light, but demand is high like with tomatoes, you may be able to only get 1 unit of a vegetable. Other than that, you are able to "shop" the market stand and customize your share how you would like (the number of items are estimated).
  • Pausing a share is not available.
  • CSA member events are TBD.
Payment Options

CSA members can pay in full OR opt to purchase with an installment plan. When members choose the installment plan 50% of the share cost is due at sign-up with a completed member agreement and the remaining balance is split into 5 payments, auto-charged monthly on the first of each month. An additional $6 is added to each auto-payment to offset credit card and processing fees. A value of the farm is that local, nutrient-dense foods be available to all – please inquire if other arrangements are needed. We reserve the right to terminate this member agreement if we do not receive an installment of your payment plan.

Our passion is filling our members' family tables with the full bounty of beautiful and delicious local veggies that positively impact their health and the environment. We believe being in a Farm Share (CSA) should be fun - and we prioritize communication, quality and diversity. We provide weekly newsletters and use social media to provide our members with new recipes and storage tips so they can get the best out of every share.

Optional Share Customization, Pausing a Share and CSA Member Benefits
  • All shares are customizable every week. We will email you a few days ahead of your pickup to let you know what the default share is for the week, plus all the available items on the farm that can then be swapped and added to your delivery for that week. All customization is done during your store access hours using our simple online platform. If you choose not to customize your box for the week, you will still get a great curated box of items from us.
  • Pause your share ahead of time and you won't get a delivery that week and your available balance will carry over for future weeks. You don't pay for the deliveries that you won't use.
  • We offer farm tours and typically a Spring, Summer and Fall gathering.
Payment Options

Automatic recurring payments with options to pay for 8 weeks or 24 weeks at a time. When a member's balance falls to zero they are automatically recharged for the next installment in their chosen payment plan. First payment is due at time of signup.

Frequently asked questions

What is a voucher?

The voucher is designed to offset the purchase of a CSA share from one of our partner farms. It does not cover the entire purchase price. Vouchers are offered in $100 and $200 amounts to be used accordingly toward the purchase of the corresponding share size.

The $100 voucher can be used for the following sizes ONLY. Mini, Small, Peck. Essentially, these are the smallest sizes offered by the farm.

The $200 voucher can be used for the following sizes ONLY. Half, Medium, Large, Regular, Half bushel, Full, Abundant, XL, Bushel, Robust. Essentially, you may use this voucher on any share EXCEPT the smallest size offered by the farm.

Both UK Organic Farming Unit (aka “South Farm”) and Rolling Fork Organic Farm have one single share size. You can only use the $200 voucher toward this share. Be sure to choose the $200 voucher if you want to partner with UK Organic Farming Unit or Rolling Fork Organic Farm.

You may only use the voucher toward the purchase of a share from one of our partner farms and only for the share size for which it is intended. The voucher has no cash value.

How long does a CSA typically last?

Farms provide weekly farm shares throughout the Kentucky growing season of spring-fall. The duration and start/end dates vary by farm. Generally, a 20-22 week and May-October timeframe is common for our 2023 participating farms. When you become a CSA member, your farm will communicate the necessary information to its specific shareholders.

What is included in a weekly CSA share?

Shares vary based on the farm and the time of year. Farms grow various crops and each week different produce items are growing into and out of maturity. Many farms show examples of past shares on their websites and social media platforms. Please keep in mind that each CSA season can be different depending on several variables such as heat, rain, soil, and labor, although every farm takes measures to deliver quality weekly shares as they are able.

How much food is included in a weekly CSA share?

The quantity of produce in each CSA share varies by farm and by week. The average weekly share will offer a seasonal variety of items (5-9 in a small/mini share and 6-12 in a large/regular share). An "item" is sometimes a bunch, bundle, or bag amount, not just a singular vegetable. Typically, a regular/full/large share is designed to supply two adults, or a small household, with most of their weekly produce needs, while a small/mini share is designed to supplement weekly produce needs for one to two adults. If you are new to CSA and unsure which size to choose, we recommend choosing a smaller share, as you can always supplement at a farmers market or buy more items to be added if your farm offers online shopping. We strongly suggest that you read the farm profiles on our CSA main page as well the individual farms’ websites to help you make the decision that is right for you

How much does a CSA cost?

The cost of a CSA varies by farm and by the size of the share. Typically, without a voucher, the cost of a regular share ranges from about $530 to $850 (subtract $200 with voucher use) and a small share is about $320 to $650 (subtract $100 with voucher use).

Some farms even offer an extra-large share for larger households, so be sure to note that if you are feeding more people at home or splitting with another family! You would also use the $200 voucher if you choose to buy an extra-large share.

Why become a CSA member?

A CSA offers several unique benefits:

  • You will experience the diversity of locally grown fresh produce.
  • You get to know your farmer and how your food is grown. Some farms offer members-only access to tours, events and you-picks. If that access is important to you, you can choose your farm accordingly!
  • Many farms offer customization features such as the ability to pause your share and either swap items in your share or buy more as needed.
  • Farms offer many different pickup locations. You can choose the location that is right for you.
  • You keep your food dollars in your community.
What happens if there is crop failure or bad weather?

CSA is a mutual commitment between a farm and its shareholders. CSA members share in the rewards of a great season and the risks that come with bad weather and pests. Participating farmers have been growing food for many seasons, and they typically grow a variety of crops. This decreases the likelihood that all crops will be ruined from a pest or weather problem but be sure to read your farm’s CSA membership agreement to learn more about their individual policies and procedures.

Who is eligible for a voucher?

Employees and retirees on a UK health insurance plan are eligible to claim a voucher. You may claim your voucher through your HR Health and Wellness dashboard.

Is claiming the voucher the same as purchasing a CSA share?

No, you must use the voucher toward the purchase of a share with the farm of your choice. Claiming a voucher is not the same as purchasing a share and does not reserve a share for you with a farm. If you do not use the voucher by May 7, 2023, your voucher will be forfeited.

How do I get the voucher?

You can claim your CSA voucher by signing on to your Health and Wellness dashboard and clicking on the CSA banner at the top of the page. If you do not see a CSA banner, you are likely not eligible for the voucher program. If you have questions about eligibility, please contact vanessa.oliver@uky.edu.

How do I use my voucher?

The $100 voucher can be used for the following sizes ONLY. Mini, Small, Peck. Essentially, these are the smallest sizes offered by the farm.
The $200 voucher can be used for the following sizes ONLY. Half, Medium, Large, Regular, Half bushel, Full, Abundant, XL, Bushel Robust. Essentially, you may use this voucher on any share EXCEPT the smallest size offered by the farm.

Both UK Organic Farming Unit (South Farm) and Rolling Fork Organic Farm have one single share size. You can only use the $200 voucher toward this share. Be sure to choose the $200 voucher if you want to partner with UK Organic Farming Unit or Rolling Fork Organic Farm.

I claimed the voucher. How do I use it?

Once you log on to your UK HR Wellness Dashboard and claim your voucher, you will receive an email with a code and a link to purchase your share. If you do not receive this email, please check your spam folder as it may end up there. You will then click the link to learn more about your farm choices. Please use your code as well as your UK linkblue ID when you sign up with the farm directly to purchase your CSA share. If you do not use both the voucher code and the linkblue ID at time of purchase, your voucher will not be applied, and your purchase will not be discounted.

Can I combine my voucher with my spouse's voucher toward the purchase of one share?

If two individuals (employee/employee, retiree/retiree, or employee/retiree) are on independent UK medical health plans AND are married or listed as sponsored dependents for one another, you may be able to combine vouchers towards the cost of one share. Please email vanessa.oliver@uky.edu to confirm eligibility and if this is a purchase option for you. Do not attempt to purchase before contacting Vanessa as you may not be eligible to combine your vouchers.

My friend and I both work at UK. Can we share a share?

Only married employees on individual health plans may combine their vouchers to purchase one share. You can, of course, split a share with whoever you like, and they do not need to work at UK. It would be

important and necessary, however, to buy your share using the name of an employee so that the single voucher is applied appropriately. Otherwise, you may not receive the discount correctly.

Can my friend/colleague/co-worker/family member give me their voucher?

No. Vouchers are non-transferable and must be in the name of the eligible employee (the one covered by the UK health insurance plan).

Will my taxes be affected if I secure the voucher but don’t buy a share?

Only the CSA purchase with the use of the UK voucher is considered a taxable benefit. If you claim a voucher but don’t use it to purchase a share, you will not be taxed or charged. The voucher will appear as taxable income on your pay stub in either March or May, depending on when you use the voucher for purchase.
