Step Up Challenge in Stridekick

For best results in the challenge, sync your fitness tracking device to its native app (for example the Fitbit app, Garmin app, etc.) every day, or at least every 72 hours. That's all there is to it! 

Who is eligible to participate?

Any UK employee with a status of .2 or greater full-time equivalency (FTE), whether you're full-time, part-time or STEPS is eligible to participate in this challenge, which requires use of a fitness tracking device/app. UK health plan members including spouses of UK employees, retirees and their spouses, in addition to employees of KCTCS, Eastern State Hospital, and ARMS--and their spouses--are also eligible.

Which fitness tracking device/apps can I use to participate?

Our challenge platform, Stridekick, offers cross-device compatibility and supports most major fitness trackers including:

  • Android phones 4.1 or above through the Google Fit app
  • Apple watch
  • iPhone 5s and above through the Apple Health app
  • Moves app on any phone
  • Fitbit
  • Garmin
  • MisFit
  • Withings
  • Jawbone
  • Xiaomi
  • Pebble

What are the dates of the challenge?

The challenge starts Thursday, November 23 at 12 a.m. midnight and ends Monday, January 1 at 11:59 p.m.

Can I join the challenge late?

Yes, the cutoff is a week after the challenge starts. The challenge starts Thursday, November 23 at midnight but the deadline to join is November 30 at 11:59 p.m. We recommend joining by the start date to maximize your opportunity to earn a prize. Please be aware you'll have zero steps logged for every day of the challenge you missed, impacting your overall daily steps average.  

What if I forget my wearable tracker or charger?

Hey, it happens. But unfortunately you'll have zero steps logged in the challenge. There is one workaround--if you have an Android or iPhone, you can treat it as your backup device. Connect your Android phone to the Google Fit app, or your iPhone to the Apple Health app, and then change your device in Stridekick to Android or Apple. Just remember to change your device in Stridekick back to your wearable when you can.

How do I sync (upload) the activity from my tracker to Stridekick?

You shouldn't need to do anything to sync from your tracker to Stridekick--it's designed that way. Once your device account is connected through the initial Stridekick account setup, Stridekick syncs the most up-to-date data from your tracker's account (Fitbit, Garmin, etc.) automatically when you log in to the Stridekick website or open the Stridekick app. Here's what Stridekick says about this.

Experiencing syncing issues? Here's an outline of how the syncing process works to help with any troubleshooting needs:

  1. When you join our challenge powered by Stridekick, you are prompted to complete the one-time setup to connect your fitness tracking device/app with Stridekick. Watch a walkthrough video. Once connected through the initial account setup, Stridekick will sync and upload your data automatically when you log in to the Stridekick website or open the Stridekick app.
  2. Each fitness tracking app (Fitbit, Garmin, etc.) offers different options for syncing. Most offer two syncing options: automatic syncing each time the app is opened on your phone, or the option to press a sync button within the app. Check the settings on your specific fitness tracking app (Fitbit, Garmin, etc.) to set your preferences for syncing. To stay current in the challenge, we recommend syncing your fitness tracker to its native app daily, or at least every 72 hours.
  3. If you notice your steps are not updating on Stridekick even though they are updated on your fitness tracking app (Fitbit, etc.), manual retrieval of the data is possible. Log in into Stridekick and click the "Fetch" button at the top left of the screen.

How often do I need to sync the steps activity on my tracker to its app (Fitbit, Garmin, etc.)?

What happens if I don't sync my tracker to its app (Fitbit, Garmin, etc.) at least every 72 hours?

How do you earn UK gear in this challenge?

Average 6,000 or more steps a day from Thanksgiving to New Year's Day.

What's the deadline to sync my tracker to its app (for all final steps to count) after the challenge ends?

There's a 3-day grace period to sync; the deadline is Thursday, January 4 at 12 a.m. midnight. 

When and how will I receive my UK gear?

You'll receive an email with an invitation to request your prize after the challenge ends.

  • On-campus (and Lexington) employees may visit MoveWell 1020 Export to pick up their prize in January (dates to be announced, but pick-up will generally be available Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.).
  • Off-campus employees located outside of Lexington may have their prize mailed.

Who has access to challenge data?

Only Stridekick and select UK Health & Wellness Specialists have access to this secure data. The only information available is your name, steps, image, distance, intensity level and minutes.
