IT Security & Policy Advisory Committee

As information technology constantly evolves, it is critical to maintain updated, well-written policies that help guide students, faculty, and staff. Therefore, the committee’s first objective will be to review Chapter 10 of the University’s Administrative Regulations. Ongoing responsibilities of the group may include:

  1. Identification of policy needs
  2. Research, drafting, and editing of policy language
  3. Assistance with gathering feedback from University constituents
  4. Assistance with distribution, communication, and education of approved policies
  5. Annual review of established policies

This group will assist us in ensuring “Recommendation 7: Security and Policy” from the University’s IT Strategic Plan is implemented.  This recommendation states that the University should provide a secure, resilient, policy-based information and infrastructure environment to protect the security, integrity, and privacy of data. The environment should also ensure the stability and continuity of the institution’s IT resources and repositories in the face of potential catastrophic events.

More specifically, Action Item 7:5 addresses the establishment of this group specifically:

Establish an IT Security Advisory Team composed of a variety of college/department staff and faculty from across the University to assist in the review and formation of appropriate IT security practices.

Security is a shared responsibility that requires diligence from all parties involved. Communication is a critical element in the extensive coordination required to maintain a successful security program. Establishing an IT Security Advisory Team will enable not only the implementation of security policies, but also gain additional objective input for security actions and plans. Security will become a leading-edge issue in establishing relationships between ITS and other entities at UK.
