Student Employment

Below are job descriptions for various entry-level student employment opportunities within the Campus Recreation Department. If you are interested in applying for one these positions, complete an online application by following the directions at the end of this page.

AQUATICS: Lifeguard

Our lifeguards provide a safe and pleasant aquatic atmosphere by safeguarding the pool users, enforcing facility rules, and acting as a resource and service person when needed. Lifeguards must maintain a degree of physical conditioning, demonstrated by passing a weekly, and monthly, swim and skills test-out.  A current Red Cross Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR/AED for the professional rescuer certification is required for hiring.

Our expectations for all University of Kentucky/Lancaster Aquatic Center lifeguards are very high. Our lifeguards are highly trained and work to polish their skills and abilities throughout the course of their employment. Once hired, lifeguards undergo a mentor training program before assuming lifeguarding responsibilities. Following this mentor training program, all lifeguards participate in an ongoing monthly in-service training program, and weekly skill test-out training program, for a total of approximately four hours of training per month. Completion of this training is a condition of employment. It is this commitment to excellence that separates University of Kentucky/ Lancaster Aquatic Center lifeguards from others.

FACILITIES: Facility Assistant

Facility Staff are responsible for providing patrons with quality customer service while supplying information, controlling access, checking out equipment, and monitoring the fitness areas. Facility staff maintain a safe environment by actively supervising activities and enforcing facility policies. Staff are trained to respond to emergencies according to the outlined Emergency Action Plans. Facility staff are also expected to maintain a clean facility by completing light cleaning/ maintenance, performing laundry duties, and completing other chores as assigned by the graduate assistant or student supervisor on duty. CPR/AED and First Aid certifications are required for all Facility Staff. Free certification classes will be taught to all new hires who are not currently certified, and employees are expected to maintain a current certification throughout their employment.



Group Fitness Instructor

Group Fitness Instructors are responsible for providing patrons with safe, fun and effective group fitness programming while helping class participants reach their fitness goals based on specific formats. Instructors must have a working knowledge and stay relevant with the latest fitness trends. Qualified applicants must hold a certification from a Nationally Accredited organization (ACE, AFAA, ACSM, etc) OR a specialty certification (Zumba, INSANITY, YogaFit, TRX, etc).

Personal Trainer

Personal Trainers are responsible for providing clients with safe, fun, effective, consistent and progressive training sessions to help clients reach specific fitness goals. Trainers need to have experience completing fitness assessments, designing and implementing progressive training sessions, and have good time management and customer service skills. Qualified applicants must hold a certification from a Nationally Accredited organization (ACE, AFAA, ACSM, NSCA, NASM).

**CPR/AED/First Aid certification is required for all of the above listed positions.

**All Fitness Staff are required to attend monthly meetings and keep their certifications up to date.

INTRAMURAL SPORTS: Trainee and Sports Official


This position is a supervisory and officiating position that will develop leadership skills applicable to any career path.  No experience necessary, training provided and a successful interview places you into the Intramural Trainee program.  All training will be provided with an opportunity for promotion if you become a supervisor.  An interest and passion for service and sport is desired.

Sports Officials

Sport officials are needed for Basketball, Flag Football, Soccer and Volleyball. Intramural Sports Officials are responsible for providing an enjoyable sport environment by enforcing the rules of the game, controlling the game environment within the intent of the rules, ensuring that the game is played fairly and upholding sportsmanship. No prior officiating experience is required; all training will be provided. An interest and passion for sport is desired.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURES: Climbing Wall Staff and Trip Leaders

Warmly greet patrons; facilitate climbing wall check-in procedures; implement all climbing activity policies and safety procedures including belaying patrons; inspect and clean equipment; route setting; other duties as assigned.

Trip leader staff will be responsible for leading half day, full day or overnight trips in the local area. Popular trips include hiking, rock climbing, kayaking, skiing, etc.  Email for more information or if interested in applying.
