Quality Enhancement Plan

What is a QEP?

Every institution accredited by SACSCOC develops a Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) as one of the 12 core requirements of their Reaffirmation of Accreditation process.  The QEP is a "carefully designed course of action that addresses a well-defined and focused topic or issue related to enhancing student learning" (SACSCOC Handbook for Reaffirmation of Accreditation, 2007, p. 3).  Each institution determines their own focus of the QEP based on its own assessment, mission, and strategic plans.

 

A Brief History of the University's QEP

During the Spring 2010 semester, the QEP Topic Selection Team (TST) canvassed the campus and community to announce the QEP initiative and brainstorm for "big ideas" regarding what we might focus on for our five-year QEP to improve student learning at UK.  This campus-wide search fulfilled the SACSCOC expectation that our topic must (a) clearly stem from broad-based input across all stakeholder groups, (b) be related to the strategic plan, and (c) potentially affect a large percentage of our students.

In June 2010, a subset of the TST participated in a two-day retreat examining the "big ideas," as well as program review reports and assessment data from units across campus, two years worth of issues of the Kentucky Kernel (the University's student-run newspaper), University press releases, and various Lexington community documents to identify emergent themes related to improving student learning that cut across them.

At the start of the Fall 2010 semester, the team rolled out six emergent themes and invited faculty, staff, students, alumni, parents, and community members to submit proposals related to one or more of them.  This was done via an interview with President Todd on WUKY, postcards distributed across campus, an announcement to the University Senate, an article in the Kentucky Kernel, and announcements on a variety of pages on the UK website, including the homepage.  These themes were:

  1. Developing Engaged Citizenship (hover)

  3. Fostering a Supportive and Vibrant Campus Culture (hover)
  4. Enhancing Scholarship: Critical Thinking, Effective Communication, & Academic Integrity (hover)
  5. Advancing 21st Century Teaching and Learning (hover)
  6. Navigating Successful Transitions (hover)

The TST received 63 proposals submitted by individuals representing undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, and community members.  In October 2010, ten authors were invited to submit white papers on their topic:

The SACS Leadership Team voted on March 24, 2011, and selected Multimodal Communication Across the Curriculum (MCXC) as the University's QEP Topic.  SACSCOC approved the QEP.
