PTS Announces Bike Voucher Program
As announced on July 15, 2015, University of Kentucky Parking and Transportation Services has launched a pilot bicycle voucher program aimed at encouraging students and employees to consider alternatives to driving a vehicle to campus. The bicycle voucher program will give up to 100 qualified students and employees a $400 voucher to a participating local bicycle shop. This one-time use voucher may be used toward the purchase of a bicycle or gear and accessories to outfit a bike that the employee or student already owns.
In order to receive the voucher, participating students and employees must sign a car-free commitment that will restrict them from purchasing a motor vehicle parking permit for two years. The bike voucher pilot program aligns with the goals set forth in the ongoing UK Transportation Master Plan (TMP) process. The TMP aims to improve access and mobility to, from, and around campus for all members of the UK community. Individuals across campus have provided feedback on the TMP through multiple open forums, surveys and correspondence throughout the past six months. The program was spearheaded by the University’s Bicycle Advisory Committee (BAC).
Interested faculty, staff and students can apply online at www.uky.edu/transportation/help-and-resources_bicycle-voucher-form. Priority will be given to those students and employees who have had a vehicle parking permit for the past year, but those new to the university will also be given consideration. The initial application window will close on Sunday, Aug. 30. Faculty, staff and students who wish to participate and who have already purchased a 2015-2016 parking permit may return it for a pro-rated refund.
Residential students are not eligible, but are encouraged to sign up for use of a bicycle through the Big Blue Cycles fleet, as explained further below.
Big Blue Cycles Lottery Now Open
Did you know that less than half of residential students and fewer than a third of all students bring a motor vehicle to campus?
One way to get around campus and Lexington without a car is with a bike from Wildcat Wheels Bicycle Library’s Big Blue Cycles fleet. This fleet of 160 bicycles is available to students living in campus housing who sign a commitment not to bring a car to Lexington and complete a short program orientation. The Big Blue Cycles bicycles are 8-speed commuter bicycles equipped with fenders and a bell. All participants will also receive a bicycle helmet. Participating students will be guaranteed the bicycle for the entire academic year.
Students may register at www.sustainability.uky.edu/BBCApplication1516. The deadline to apply for a bike is 11:59 p.m. EST on Friday, August 7.
If more than 160 students apply, bikes will be awarded through a lottery process. Returning residents who held a parking permit the previous year will receive priority consideration.
