Considering a Car-Free Year? Commute Club Can Help

By lasu224 · May 14, 2020

There’s never been a better time to consider going car-free on campus. One of the many benefits – aside from cost savings and potential health perks -- is the ability to participate in Commute Club, a program that rewards students and employees for making a one-year, car-free commitment.

Whether you're new to car-free commuting or have been doing it for years, Commute Club may be a great option for you.

"Commute Club covers all the bases," said Sandra Broadus, UK's Alternative Transportation Manager, "whether you ride the bus, ride a bike, walk, or carpool to campus."
Applications for the 2020 Commute Club opened on Monday, May 11, and the deadline to apply for this free program is Wednesday, September 30.
Commute Club is offered through UK Transportation Services. Its goal is to reduce campus parking demand and traffic congestion and to support sustainable transportation options. Members agree to forego purchasing a regular vehicle parking permit for one fiscal year, although they still have access to a limited number of single-day permits for occasional use.

Membership is open to students and employees and benefits vary based upon the group. Some of the benefits include:

  • Zipcar (car sharing) membership and credits
  • Guaranteed Ride program which offers a limited number of reimbursements for taxi and ride-hailing services such as Uber and Lyft.
  • Ability to purchase up to 50 single-day parking permits
  • Ability to participate in a Commuter Rewards Program, allowing members to earn points for each emissions-friendly commute they log and redeem those points for prizes on an annual basis.

Applicants who apply now will be notified of their status in the club in June. Club benefits will begin on July 1.
